Defining Success at SharkNinja: How We Took Ownership of Our Culture
We used to find ourselves apologizing for our fast-paced, ever-changing, breakthrough environment—until we realized that we have nothing to be sorry about.
#1 Vacuum Brand in America. #1 Motorized Kitchen Appliance Brand in America. #1 Hard Floor Steam Cleaning Brand in America. Boldly entering the coffee market last year with our Ninja Coffee Bar. That success wasn’t built on tip-toeing around the competition or by developing products at a snail’s pace. That success took dedication, grit, relentlessness, top-notch talent, teamwork, resourcefulness, and a crazy amount of passion. We’re motivated by delighting our consumers; that’s what we live for and we’ll stop at nothing to continue to bring 5-Star products to market. If our consumers are happy, then there are no apologies necessary.
We take immense pride in the fact that we know our consumers better than anyone else. We are constantly refining our understanding of what they want and repeatedly delivering the best possible product experience to them. We are never satisfied with good—we’re continuously pushing ourselves to think about how can we make better products and bring genuine delight to every home in the world.
In defining success, we took a look at the big picture and evaluated what success means to us, what it took to find ourselves standing in the winner’s circle year after year, and what we needed to do not only to sustain that success, but to surpass our future goals. We said “see you later!” to the apologies and began to make a genuine and conscious effort to own who we are as a company.
Our people are passionate about growth—in themselves and in others. We aren’t content with doing things as they’ve been done elsewhere. We don’t just check a box to say a job is done. We are constantly thinking about how we can make things better. We appreciate being asked the hard questions that push our thinking. We’re unafraid to challenge each other due to our common goals of persistent improvement and shattering glass ceilings.
Does SharkNinja operate the same way as other consumer goods companies?—No. Is our 5-Star product development life cycle lightning fast?—You better believe it. Do we cut corners in order to turn a profit?—Never. Will we release a product if we don’t feel that it will improve the lives of our consumer?—Not today, not tomorrow; not in this lifetime.
In defining our culture, we translated the factors that we once said sorry for into success qualities that we could share unforgivingly, proudly, and clearly. We developed a solid concept that embodies who we are, what SharkNinja stands for, and what we expect from our executives, leaders, and associates. We outlined success attributes that will continuously open a dialogue and lend our teams a framework that encourages accountability for ourselves and others. We documented our personal and professional business values in a way that could be easily shared with new hires, long-time associates, and potential candidates; setting a clear expectation of SharkNinja’s Breakthrough Culture while being fully aware that our breakthrough environment isn’t for everyone.
Drawing upon characteristics that amplify growth to achieve success and impact, we combined elements that reflect SharkNinja’s focus on fulfilled associates whom feel cared about, can see an impact in their work, and experience growth in themselves. We took the time to appreciate that our success is a direct result of our unbelievable associates; they’re passionate about winning, innovating, and constantly challenging themselves to grow and evolve. From there we thought deeply about our SharkNinja family and determined what behaviors and actions were required to ensure that all associates are truly fulfilled… that’s how our 5 Qualities for Success and Impact came to life:
1. Standing for Growth in Oneself and Others
MANTRA: Everyone must grow for us to be successful.
I continually focus on expanding my personal capacity. I am never satisfied solely with “knowing what I know.” I push myself outside my comfort zone. I take extraordinary actions which enables others to take on new and exciting challenges. I care enough to provide candid and constructive feedback.
2. Be Real and Authentic
MANTRA: Build trust, act with integrity, and show humility.
I always deliver on my word. I am self-aware with the courage to be humble around others. I am respected.
3. Challenge and Be Open to Being Challenged
MANTRA: Ask tough questions and remain open to being challenged.
I have an obligation to ask powerful, or even uncomfortable, questions that cause reflection and deeper thinking about what is possible. I question ideas and assumptions because it is about our collective progress, not the individual. I understand that I am being challenged in order to lead to a better outcome. I am open to incorporating different perspectives in my thinking.
4. Having an Entrepreneurial Spirit and Mindset
MANTRA: Have a “make it happen” way of thinking.
I am excited to push toward impactful outcomes and measurable results. I am resourceful and recover quickly from any setbacks.
5. Inspired and Inspiring
MANTRA: Have a passion to make an impact, translating it to others.
I am excited about the possibility of what I am doing. I invite change and the opportunity it creates. I have a clear vision and create opportunities to instill a sense of excitement in others. I am a champion of change. I create meaningful connections with others. I am a respected role model.

I have been working at SharkNinja (Less than a year)
Fast-paced environment with a lot of opportunities for advancement. Really talented co-workers.
The pace of work can be exhausting.
I applied through college or university. I interviewed at SharkNinja (Newton, MA).
There were four or five mini-interviews with different department heads, each about 45 minutes long. The company uses this as a means to determine where they think you will fit best. There is some redundancy in interviews, where I was asked to review my skills and experiences. Interviews by the R&D engineers included some brief questions designed to have you think outside the box, demonstrate how you may work with them, and show general engineering knowledge.
