Shawmut Design and Construction – Why Work For Us?

Shawmut Design and Construction is a national construction management firm that builds exciting projects from coast-to-coast. Our main objective is delivering exceptional, personalized service to our clients.

Our unique business model allows our project teams to better service our clients by focusing their specialized expertise within one of the following areas: academic, commercial, corporate interiors, cultural and historic preservation, healthcare and life sciences, hotels, gaming, restaurants, retail, spas and health clubs, and sports venues. This approach also has allowed us to diversify as a company, attract the best people, and cultivate a team of expert project executives, project managers, superintendents, and estimators.

Deliver an amazing experience for our clients. Project after project.

From day one, we’re all in. All the time. That’s part of our Core Values. And what we call the Shawmut Way. And that means we always:

Deliver world-class client service above all else. It’s the only way we know how to do business. And it’s non-negotiable.

Actively drive a safe and injury-free environment. We’re about more than just compliance; we’re about prevention. Our #1 goal is to make sure everyone on-site and in the office goes home safely every night.

Grow and develop our people to be the best. We invest heavily in our people—making sure they are the best in the industry. Spend a few minutes with any of them and you'll see what we mean.

Value diversity, openness, and respect. People who feel good about coming to work end up doing the best work. We don’t just preach teamwork, we excel at it.

Walk the walk. We’re an employee-owned company. We bring an owner’s mentality to everything we do. That means we always do what’s right for you and our company.

Find a better way. No finger-pointing, just problem-solving. If it’s in your best interest, it’s in ours too.

Always act with a long-term and ethical view. There’s only one way to do business, the right way.

Every company has a certain vibe to it. A certain way of doing things. We refer to it around here as “the Shawmut Way.”

From our values and work ethic (everyone contributes), to our relentless customer service and the way we have fun (company get-togethers and group outings), we think we’ve got something pretty special going on here.

Lending a helping hand.

We haven’t forgotten where we came from (a small company in the heart of Roxbury, Mass.), and we feel very strongly about giving back to the communities in which we have offices. Some of the organizations with which we regularly work include The Posse Foundation LA, Rebuilding Together NY, Room to Dream Foundation MA, Community Servings MA, Summer Search Boston, Connecticut Food Bank, and ACE Mentor Program NY.

We take safety seriously.

Nothing is more important to us than making sure everyone returns home to their loved ones at the end of every day. And that not only means following safety protocol at all times; it means going beyond protocol—and coming up with even better safety measures here in the office or out in the field.

We know that the best way to attract and retain great people is to offer great benefits. And ours are among the best in the industry.

ESOP. A BENEFIT THAT WILL BENEFIT YOU FOR YEARS TO COME.

Shawmut is 100% employee-owned, which means employees get to reap the financial benefits of being part owner through the Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). The ESOP is an incentive and retirement plan that most employees will become a participant in after one full year of employment. The amount of the annual contributions will vary from year to year, based on the success of the company. Along with contributing to your 401(k), ESOP is a great way to help build your retirement nest egg.

I have been working at Shawmut Design and Construction full-time

    Pros

Shawmut Design and Construction in a 100% Employee Owned Company- which motivates everyone to take ownership in what we do. We have fantastic clients and exciting projects. We hire the top builders and work with the best designers, architects, and subcontractors.

    Cons

When you join Shawmut, you make a commitment to customer service. Hard work and talent are important, but exceeding client's expectations is what makes you a success here. There are easier places to work that are not as demanding.

    Advice to Management

Thank you for supporting each Shawmut team member to perform at our best. FLEX time, transparent communication, investments in safety, and ESOP profit sharing to all employees show that the entire Executive Team is committed to making Shawmut a great place to work.

    Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Shawmut Design and Construction (Boston, MA) in February 2016.

    Interview

Interviewed with 4 staff members during the first round and 3 staff members. Two separate recruiters reached out to me to initially schedule the interviews. The first round of interviews seemed as if they were convincing me as to why I should want to work for the company while the second day was full of many questions, mainly relating to my current position and my work ethic and drive.

    Interview Questions

    • Why do you want to work for Shawmut? What makes you stand out? How do you prioritize tasks? What is your normal day like?   Answer Question
