Shea Labagh Dobberstein – Why Work With Us?

Shea Labagh Dobberstein (SLD), one of the oldest and most well-respected accounting firms in San Francisco, provides a full spectrum of professional accounting, auditing, tax and consulting services to privately-held businesses, individuals and nonprofit organizations.

For over 70 years, the Northern California business community has recognized SLD for having the deep expertise and specialized resources of a national firm, coupled with the personalized attention of a San Francisco-based advisor.

A staff of 14 principals and over 90 professionals help SLD’s clients improve their financial capabilities through the following:

  • Deep expertise amassed through decades of client involvement across many industries. Many of SLD’s partners and managers have extensive and proven experience as alumni of national “Big Four” accounting firms.
  • An internal collaborative approach allows SLD to analyze client organizations from different perspectives and proactively identify opportunities to improve financial performance.
  • Clients experience continuity of staff due to a supportive, balanced work environment at SLD that has resulted in relatively low turnover at all staff levels. Dedicated client teams work with the same client over many years.
  • Advice clients can trust. SLD is composed of unbiased, independent accountants. Less than 10% of accounting firms in the US have the distinction of earning seven consecutive “unmodified” peer reviews without comments from the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), meaning that they are adhering to strict quality control standards. SLD is proud to be one of this elite group.
  • Global reach. SLD’s alliance with DFK International gives clients access to resources around the world, including over 2,200 professionals nationally.

With a long history of exceptional service, SLD has developed extensive knowledge of the issues facing clients’ industries. SLD’s service approach is based on year-round, open and responsive communication. The firm is positioned to offer the best of both worlds: the deep expertise and dedicated resources of a national firm, with the personalized attention of a regional advisor.

    Application

I applied online. The process took 6 days. I interviewed at Shea Labagh Dobberstein (San Francisco, CA) in May 2019.

    Interview

A Principal with the firm emailed me to gather a few more details after my online application. He then asked to set up a phone screen. It was relative quick, and he did not seem to have many questions prepared ahead of time. It was evident as the interview went on that he didn't know what HR or recruiting questions to ask to figure out my experience. He asked some really weird questions, and usually followed up any question about my work experience with, "And did you enjoy it?" or "How did you like it?" He didn't ask me any questions about demonstrable HR or Recruiting experience even though I have worked as a Recruiter in the past. They were very basic questions, and he clearly had only skimmed my resume. He also mentioned many times during the interview that the exact duties of the role hadn't been nailed down- they were still trying to figure out if the role even had any HR duties even though it was in the advertised title.
It also seemed to rub him the wrong way that I wanted to know if the role was hourly or exempt- and he was reluctant to give me information about the benefits package or the salary range- even though this is required by CA law for employers to provide a salary range upon request as of Jan 2018.
Overall very disappointing interview- I had high hopes based on the previous reviews on Glassdoor. I followed up after the interview via email to thank him for the conversation. He responded that I was no longer under consideration, and I thanked him again and asked for feedback from the phone screen and details as to why they would not be moving forward with my application. He never responded. I think that's indicative of the attitude at this firm overall. I was excited to initially hear back from this company, but ended up very disappointed.
