Shentel – Why Work For Us?


Shentel is the largest Sprint PCS affiliate in the United States and currently provides wireless service to approximately 1,200,000 customers. As an affiliate company, Shentel has exclusive rights to provide Sprint wireless service to certain markets.

Shentel currently serves a four-state area – including markets within Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania. Shentel builds and owns the network and owns and operates the Sprint retail stores. Shentel is also responsible for local customer service and directs local advertising and promotions.


The Sharpest Cable Television

Even as devices change and technology improves, the majority of Shentel customers still consume their entertainment from television and we provide the best channels at the most competitive price.

In addition to offering the best in HD programming and HD/DVR service, Shentel also has a whole-home gateway system called TiVo which gives customers all the great features of TV plus streaming services and full recording capabilities. Shentel remains focused on building long-term value and continuing to pursue improvements, diversification and growth opportunities.

The Fastest Internet

Shentel provides high-speed broadband Internet to primarily rural areas throughout Virginia and West Virginia and in Western Maryland. With speeds up to 150Mbps, Shentel Internet brings power to customers who are demanding more from their Internet service.

Bringing service to rural customers is a familiar path for a company that started in 1902 as a telephone cooperative. For some telecommunications companies, winding roads and mountains, small communities and big rivers challenge their ability to offer service. These obstacles are considered opportunities at Shentel.

Telephone service is the root of all things Shentel. Today’s crystal clear quality no longer resembles its ancient ancestor, except that – more than 100 years later – telephone service is still about making connections. Whether calling the neighbor down the street or chatting with a friend on the other side of the nation, Shentel continues to provide the most reliable and effective telephone service.

With local and long distance options and various features you can’t live without (like Caller ID and Call Waiting) Shentel has a home phone package that can be designed to fit the need of each customer.


The philanthropic spirit of Shentel stretches back to its earliest days. Significant donations of funds, time and materials are given to the communities we serve – evidence of Shentel’s desire to create deeper connections.

The company has two favorite programs that are embraced in all service areas – the Summer Backpack program in June and The Big Give in December. The Backpack program was established as a way to ensure that kids who rely on school for meals, would have access to food in the summer. Since Shentel has started this program, the company has contributed more than 6 tons of food to various food banks and community food pantries.

The yearend program called The Big Give is a success on many levels. Employees adopt families, senior citizens, nursing homes, orphanages or charitable organizations to make sure those without are able to have a happy holiday season. The company divides into teams and work to raise the money needed for the special project they have selected. The hundreds of people impacted each year are grateful for the gifts, food and clothes, but the Shentel employees often feel that they are the ones who have received the best gift.

These philanthropic opportunities – in addition to others like Adopt-a-Highway, park renovations etc. – extend and build staff relationships and pride in the Shentel brand. Executives, customer service representatives, store managers, supervisors, technicians – all categories of Shentel employees – volunteer side by side as teammates to make a positive difference in the communities we serve. The sense of pride that accompanies giving is very alive at Shentel.


Training and developing employees at all levels and stages of their careers is a priority at Shentel. Multiple avenues for training and development are available, including a tuition assistance program for full-time employees.

Shentel University – our on-line Learning Management System – provides opportunities to improve existing talents and develop new skills. Shentel has partnered with to give employees unlimited access to course offerings from management, technical and software modules. Employees use this tool to access trainings by authorities in their respective fields to add breadth and depth to their personal and professional development.

Shentel also offers management trainings throughout the year which cover topics such as behavioral interviewing, project management and emotional intelligence.


Shentel offers employees a comprehensive benefits program to help them stay healthy, feel secure and maintain a work/life balance. The company also provides full-time employees with a bi-weekly contribution that can be used to purchase benefits.

Available benefits include medical, dental, vision, life and accidental death & dismemberment, disability, and accident insurances. Additionally, the company offers a competitive 401(k), educational assistance, flexible spending accounts, employee phone/cable/Internet discounts, and an employee assistance plan.

  • Full-time and part-time employees are eligible for Shentel’s 401(k) plan, and will receive a 5% basic contribution plus up to 3% matching contribution.
  • Full-time employees who wish to pursue college courses, certifications or other professional growth are eligible for up to $4000 in financial assistance annually.
  • Shentel offers options for medical, dental and vision insurance to all full-time employees. The company also provides a contribution that employees can use to purchase benefits.
  • All full-time Shentel employees are eligible for a discounted phone plan from Sprint. Additional lines of service will receive a discount off of the regular consumer rate plan(s) selected.
  • Shentel provides peace of mind to Full Time employees through our Short Term and Long Term Disability Insurance and up to two times annual salary in Life Insurance at no cost to the employee.
  • Full-time employees who reside in our cable and Internet service areas are eligible for discounts on those services. Services may require purchase or rental of modems or other equipment.
