    Pros

The school district offers the spouses at Fort Irwin a great part time job with the noon duty supervisor postition. It has convenient hours and decent pay and even offers sick pay and retirement cointributions.

    Cons

The district does not actually interviewing for these positions so you end up with employees who are not appropriate for the position. There is also no formal training program or standard operating procedure so there is a lot of heresy and gossip.

    Advice to Management

Develop a training manual and s.o.p. and appoint a Supervisor for each school site that is paid more but is in charge of said training and answering to administration.

    Application

I applied online. The process took 4+ weeks. I interviewed at Silver Valley Unified School District in February 2011.

    Interview

The test for School Secretary began with a typing test. They allowed 30 minutes so that you could take the 5 minute test several times in order to improve your score. The skills test was 90 minutes and consisted of questions about alphabetical order, a lot of math problems (including word problems), accounting questions, Excel questions and general questions ("What would you do if"). A calculator was provided. The staff at the district office is very professional. The score results were mailed quickly. The interview was a panel. They were very friendly and asked questions. Most of the questions can be found online if you search for interview questions for a school secretary.

    Interview Questions

    • The accounting questions on this School Secretary skill test were the most difficult.   1 Answer
    • The Excel questions on the skills test were fairly easy.   1 Answer
