Silverchair is changing the way that scientists, doctors, and researchers discover and use expert information. Scholarly and professional publishers use the Silverchair Platform to deliver distinctive online sites and products from their unique content. Silverchair includes comprehensive product development and migration services, online management tools, and ongoing support to ensure publishers achieve their product vision.
Silverchair has consistently pushed the boundaries in applying a semantic layer to expert content databases, and we have designed our platform to exploit enriched data to create advances in discoverability, contextual linking, and targeted content delivery for consumers of expert content. While some call the Semantic Web “Web 3.0”, we’ve been hard at work applying these concepts to web applications for more than 15 years.
We employ over 120 professionals with a unique combination of skills – technology, product design and development expertise, and STM market knowledge. Our team has grown over the years while maintaining our roots in Charlottesville, VA.
Since our founding in 1993, Silverchair has worked with the most prestigious organizations in the science, technology, and medical (STM) information sector, as well as professional societies, humanities publishers, and government agencies. Among our esteemed clients are Oxford University Press, the American Medical Association, McGraw-Hill Education, Wolters Kluwer Health, Duke University Press, and many others.
Silverchair has achieved a unique balance by offering the structure that a typical startup usually lacks, while not being burdened with the bureaucracy seen in big corporations. This position has enabled Silverchair to constantly improve, innovate, and create.
Silverchair offers a stimulating work environment where excellence and ingenuity are rewarded. We believe that the quality of the people on our team is the single most important factor in our good fortune to date, and we select, manage, and compensate accordingly. Silverchair’s location on the Downtown pedestrian mall gives us a front-row seat to all that Charlottesville has to offer. With the Free Speech Wall on one end and an Escape Room on the other, with incredible food and a lively arts scene, this is a town that not only invites but nurtures variety, creativity, and balance. What better place to locate a company that thrives on those qualities.
Getting tired on a Friday afternoon? Enjoy a cup of Snowing in Space cold-brew nitro coffee on tap in the kitchen!

Weekend plans looking sparse? Silverchairians enjoy getting together outside of work either informally for happy hours and team outings, or for company-sponsored functions like picnics at King Family polo, roller skating at Carver Rec Center, or our company picnic.
Silverchair gets its name from the fourth book in the Chronicles of Narnia series, noted for its themes of persistence and transformation. The inspiration still weaves its way through the company, both in team names (e.g. Narnia) and building locations (e.g. Cair Paravel, Wood Between the Worlds, & Spare Oom).
The Australian rock band came later, but it occasionally leads to confusion (including an application for an Editorial Assistant position from someone who listed as one of his qualifications that he had been an office manager for Soundgarden—he didn’t get the job).
"A UX mind frame that starts at sketches and collaboration with UI developers.”

“Silverchair is a great place to work on the downtown mall and is carving out a significant niche in their industry.”
“The people are some of the best I've ever worked with. They are engaged, dedicated, smart problem solvers.”
“Smart people, cool technology, still a relatively young company with an ability to influence future growth; Really cool office in a historic building right on the downtown mall.”
"Workspace is beautiful, people are friendly and talented/know how to work hard/have fun. Management is down-to-earth and friendly."
"Competitive pay and benefits!"
"Proactively shaping company for greater impact and growth."
"In addition to being located in a great area of Charlottesville, one of the best things about working at Silverchair is definitely the people. I have found lifetime friends and mentors through this company."
I have been working at Silverchair full-time (More than a year)
As many reviewers have said, the people at Silverchair are incredible. They're smart and so good at what they do, but they're also warm and friendly and supportive, which is why work and social lives can bleed together for many employees.
The work is challenging and fast-paced, but management works hard to make sure everyone is heard, complaints are followed all the way through to solutions, and strategies and processes are constantly re-evaluated and optimized.
I really appreciate Silverchair's clear devotion to being a "learning culture" and to constant improvement. I deeply admire, respect, and even LIKE my coworkers - a rarity far too often in the workplace.
Silverchair is clearly going places, so now is an especially fun time to be working here.
Also: the snacks are great, and there's a KEG of nitro cold brew.
Because of the devotion to continuous improvement (and Agile process), things are always changing: whether it's teams moving to a different physical space, processes changing frequently, team members moving to other teams, or new products/services being introduced. I can see how this could be overwhelming to people who like a predictable and more rigid environment. But if you come in with an open mind and flexibility, it's easy to see how all these adjustments contribute to making things ever better.
Advice to Management
Communication is always an issue with large, growing companies who juggle a variety of teams, operational priorities, and clients. I think Silverchair is doing a good job of it, but it's always good to keep that at the forefront so people feel informed and included.
I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Silverchair (Charlottesville, VA) in December 2017.
I originally applied for Associate SQA. I submitted my application online. I had an inside contact so I immediately passed the HR phone screen and was told I'd be contacted by the hiring manager. The hiring manager then had a phone interview with me, and told me at the end of the call he wanted to have me come in and interview with ~6-8 team members (~3hours). Once that was done, around four days later, I was contact by the recruiter and told I was being considered for a different position and she called me along with the hiring manager for the new position (Associate Business Analyst). I was asked to come in for one last in-person interview, which they kindly kept short because they knew I couldn't be away for very long. A few business days later, I was sent an offer letter. I felt as though everything was expedited since this was right before Christmas/New Year's and I think (or at the very least hope) they were enthusiastic about me as a candidate.
