Technical Account Manager

Being a woman in tech, I only recently started advocating for myself at work about advancement opportunities. Because of this I wanted to ask this question to my male counterparts. When you have 1:1's with your direct reports and talk about career growth / aspirations what is your managers’ response typically? I’d like to gauge how my experience (negative) differs from others. For instance are you met with blockades, enthusiasm, dread, etc?

Pros

It's great to start in a company where everyone is convinced about their products . There is a warm atmosphere and even if we work intensively , work life balance stays important.

Cons

As we grow fast , we need to stay flexible in our work priorities . Developing our products take sometimes time , but it's always for better results .

    I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Silverfin (London, England)

    A tedious, long-winded and overbearing process only for the outcome to be that they offered me the job but then decided to rescind the offer because I dared to negotiate a 10% salary increase. The irony is they advertise themselves as a great place to work and were boastful of how great this role was going to be for me, but the red flags were clear during the interview process and it was my naivety for choosing to ignore them.

    The process was incredibly exhausting. It was interview after interview, sometimes speaking to the same person more than once and with more than one interview scheduled on the same day - it all became extremely repetitive and there was a clear disregard for the fact that I was still in a full time job so was having to juggle everything around their unnecessarily long process. I was even asked to come into the office two times and each time I spoke to someone at the company, the recruiter also followed up with a call so all in all, I spent well over 12 hours commuting, prepping and interviewing.

    When the offer came through, they were shamelessly pushy knowing that I was in the interview process with a few other companies and were uncooperative and unsympathetic when I asked for more time to finish my other interviews. I felt extremely pressured when they sent the contract over for me to review - naturally, I asked for time to carefully check over it but they were unprofessionally demanding and said that they could only give me 1 full day to make a decision because they had already led another candidate on and were waiting on my decision so they could turn the other candidate down if I accepted. I do not think it just that I have to be pressured into making a brash decision because of their abysmal recruitment management.

    Nonetheless, I reviewed the contract and like so many candidates do and should do, negotiated a very reasonable 10% salary increase which would bring the offer to just about the market rate. To show respect to the time Silverfin had put into the process, I didn't simply ask for a pay increase, I put time and energy into researching and wrote a detailed email with accompanying stats with sources.

    The next day the recruiter called me, during my working hours, only to say that my actions were offensive and that they were shocked I could ask for a higher salary worthy of my skills and expectation. They were shamelessly manipulative and twisted the situation to make me feel guilty for doing what every self-respecting candidate would do. Perhaps to justify their deplorable behaviour, the recruiter condescendingly explained that they wouldn't want me to start a job feeling frustrated and that we were no longer aligned therefore, they would be redacting the offer immediately.

    I honestly can say I feel like I dodged a bullet with Silverfin. Looking at their other Glassdoor reviews, having spoken to ex-employees and sharing my interview experience with other like-minded individuals, I am so sure that this was the right outcome for me. 2 weeks later I would go on to have 3 offers above their offer without even having to negotiate. My only regret is that I wasted so much time on a company that had so little respect for me.
