We have a number of initiatives to ensure we’re building a diverse team, and creating and maintaining an environment in which we’re supporting, celebrating, and promoting the growth of every employee. This starts with the goals we set across the company – from Marketing to People Operations to Product and Engineering, every department has specific DEI initiatives unique to their function.

On the recruitment front, we uphold equitable and standardized processes so every candidate has the opportunity for success. We create scripted interviews, conduct interview training, and craft interview kits for every role to help us make objective decisions and mitigate unconscious bias. We do not weigh where candidates went to school or the name of the company where they last worked, and we have a no-negotiation policy to ensure that every employee is paid fairly for their skills. Externally, we partner and align ourselves with organizations that aim to advance marginalized communities like Jopwell, Latinas in Tech, and Women Who Code. 

Internally, we sponsor employee-led Affinity Groups in which folks from underrepresented groups come together around shared identities to discuss challenges they face and seek support in a safe environment. Employees launched our WoClub (Women of Color Club) and LGBTQ groups back in 2019. The leaders of the Affinity Groups partner with People Operations to create initiatives for the advancement of marginalized groups, exchange feedback, and collaborate on company-wide programming that aims to bolster allyship and celebrate diversity. 

We aim to empower the entire team by providing them with the knowledge and tools to be well-rounded advocates and allies. We partner with outside firms like LifeLabs, Nova Collective and Paradigm on an ongoing basis to provide externally-led DEI training around various topics like allyship, giving feedback, growth mindset, and unconscious bias, as well as host facilitated conversations on topics like race relations in the workplace. We equip our managers to inclusively lead so that everyone at Skillshare is equally supported in their growth and valued as a unique individual. 

Transparency is one of our core values, and we aim to create a safe space in which every employee feels comfortable voicing their thoughts, has a clear line of communication with our Management team, and trusts that we will act upon their feedback. Our Management team is always available via weekly Office Hours, and we organize small group sessions with our CEO every week. Skip-level meetings are also standard here.

We know the work to create and sustain a culture we’re proud of will never be over, and that’s why we take an all hands on deck approach to DEI as a company. Everyone in the organization is accountable for contributing to our collective growth as a company. By co-sharing DEI responsibilities across the team, we can work together to build a strong work culture unafraid of innovation, change, failure, and success.

    Pros

    I was fortunate to work with a talented, highly collaborative team at Skillshare. Everyone understood the company's goals, the product ecosystem and how their work as an individual affected both. Open collaboration and qualitative research helped me understand the specific needs of students, teachers, and our own content creators.
