I worked at SkyWave full-time
Flexible hours, nice people, ability to change careers within the company, ability to travel or work in other countries globally, good benefits, interesting technology, small-company feel. Some perks: casual dress code, free tea/coffee/hot chocolate, free parking, annual company-wide lunch.
There is not much training for employees, slow on innovation, not much team-building activities, R&D software development follows traditional waterfall and uses some outdated in-house tools. Base salary is on the low-side, but targets-based annual bonus makes the overall income more competitive. Bonus is paid 4 months into the following year and only current employees at the payout time are eligible.
I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at SkyWave (Ottawa, ON (Canada)) in July 2014.
First interview was with HR of SkyWave, literally asked about every piece of experience in my resume. The HR was quite kind and warm and was very pleased about my answers, so without setting up another time for the second interview, directly sent me to the manager and a senior developer. No hard technical questions, still focus on my experience and knowledge level.
