The Smartling Story

Founded in 2009 at a Manhattan coffee shop, Smartling has grown to become a technology hub in the center of New York City. Our large, open office allows our team members to work together creatively on constantly growing our product features and improving our customer experience. Jack Welde

Founder & CEO

Jack is a technology early-adopter, serial entrepreneur, software patent-holder, product evangelist, and combat-decorated Air Force pilot.

Before founding Smartling, he served as SVP of Product at eMusic and COO/CTO at SheSpeaks and RunTime Technologies. He also co-founded Trio Development, a software company that created the first personal information manager, which was acquired by Apple in 1993. He holds a BS in Computer Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, where he also studied linguistics and interned with Professor William Labov, and an MBA from Cameron University in Germany.

Jack was named one of Fast Company’s “Who’s Next” in 2011, and was named a 2013 NYC Venture Mentor by the New York City Economic Development Corporation.

    Advice to Management

    Keep developing and promoting individuals that are already within the organization, this will greatly improve retention rates. Keep pushing for diversity initiatives and foster a more robust culture.

    I applied online. The process took 2+ weeks. I interviewed at Smartling (Salt Lake City, UT) in May 2020.

    Interview

    Was contacted by email by a recruiter and an interview was set up with the recruiter and manager of customer success. A lot of getting to know each other questions were asked and understanding my background. All done by video due to social distancing as I was in Salt Lake City and they’re in NYC.

    Another round of interviews was then scheduled with a member of the CSM team and the director of account management. Everyone was incredibly professional, responded quickly, asked good questions, and made the overall experience very enjoyable.

    Even though I didn’t receive an offer, I applaud this company for their transparency and for the professionalism through the interview process. You guys have it down.
