I worked at Smith Micro full-time (More than 8 years)
I was on the Productivity and Graphics team, which was a close-knit and congenial group. We had a strong connection to our products, good leadership and a pleasant work environment.
The upper management at SMSI never really "got" the P&G products- we were acquired from other companies and not well integrated with the core SMSI product line. Overall the company suffered from seemingly arbitrary decision-making at high levels, lack of effective strategic planning and generally poor internal communications.
Advice to Management
At this point I don't know that anything I could suggest would be helpful, beyond replacing the top management team. Ensure that leaders at all levels understand the products they represent. Don't lose track of details. Take care of the people who do the work.
