Smith & Howard – Why Work With Us?

Our purpose: Creating extraordinary value for our Clients, People and Community.

Our mission: We have a passionate commitment to responsive, personal service.

We know that we can only achieve our purpose and successfully achieve our mission if we all live by our four core values:

Clients: Passionate service drives our growth.

It excites us to serve our clients.  This shows in our responsive, creative and practical approach to providing valuable solutions and meeting client needs.  Long-term relationships with clients are the foundation of our firm.  Together, we form a team committed to our clients’ success.

People: We grow stronger together.

Our firm is a united group of bright, motivated individuals who embrace our values, purpose and vision.  Because effective leadership is crucial to our future and permeates at all levels of the firm, we encourage mentoring and coaching to move people forward along their career path.  Rewarding and retaining the best people ensures the future success of our people and the firm.

Excellence:  Smarter, better, every day.

We believe in doing everything with excellence and eagerly seek to improve ourselves and our operations.  We take great pride in the professional quality of our work.  Continued excellence motivates us to expand services which benefit our clients and the community.

Integrity: Doing the right thing.

We act with integrity and honesty because our reputation is our most valuable asset.  As such, we will not sacrifice quality or profits for the sake of growth.  We make this commitment to our clients, our people, our profession and our community.  In doing so, we ensure that the firm remains respected and transcends generations.

All firms talk about their culture, but what is culture really, day to day, and does it make a difference? When we recently asked our employees to tell us the most important thing that we should make sure we don’t lose sight of as we grow, the overwhelming answer was “our culture.”

Here, culture is best described in our purpose – providing extraordinary value to our clients, our people and our community. Day to day, that includes how we interact with each other and our clients. It’s the organizations we choose to volunteer our time and resources for. It’s how we have fun in the office and outside of the office. It’s the freedom to try new things, whether it’s a company team for the Peachtree Road Race or an innovative new service that will help one particular industry.

Our culture is also one of professional growth. What do you want to do in your career; who do you want to do it with – the kind of clients you want to work with and the colleagues you will enjoy being around day after day; just how far and fast do you want to grow? We provide mentoring, education in technical and soft skills, and the opportunity to use partners as sounding boards for your aspirations.

We’re on an upward trajectory – taking advantage of new, exciting ways to grow our business and to work with an expanded community of clients. The next decade will be unlike any other at Smith & Howard. We’re looking for like-minded professionals who want an opportunity to grow with us.

I worked at Smith & Howard full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Incredible experience working at Smith and Howard. Upper management really takes the time to invest in each employee, and I attribute much of my professional growth to the internal processes in place to grow and develop each employee.

Work life balance is excellent outside of busy season, and manageable most of the time during the busy months

Team-oriented environment is excellent. I never felt like I was working alone to work through issues I was unprepared to handle. Everyone was always willing to help each other, which definitely helps get through the stressful times.

    Cons

The firm is currently top heavy, which puts a lot of pressure on 1-3 year employees.

Salaries appear to be competitive with the market, however, pay increases are not awarded in-line with promotions. Years of service appear to be the driving factor.

    Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Smith & Howard in October 2017.

    Interview

I was excited to be contacted within a few days of applying. I was contacted via email to set up a phone interview. Two days later when I phone interviewed, I spent 40+ minutes on the phone for them to tell me they thought I was overqualified. What I don't understand is my experience is on my resume. Why waste a candidate's time and interview them if you already feel like they are overqualified?
