Our consultants and customers are the best. We gathered together to celebrate and give some high-fives for another year as a Top Workplace. We know that sdg is a special place because of all of you.
Did you know that sdg is an ESOP? If you are wondering more about why we made the decision to go to 100% employee-owned this article tells you why.
Coming in at #7 on the most read list from TECHdotMN is our story of why we sold out-- to our employees.
sdg is an employee-owned IT consulting and custom enterprise software and application development company that builds solutions using technology. As a 10x Best Places to Work in the Twin Cities award winner, sdg looks for passionate technologists that align with our core values, thrive in a community, and take pride in crafting great software to add to our 150+ full-time consultant team. We have been around since 1989 and are currently located in Golden Valley, MN.
We look for people that are the right fit for our culture - having the right attitude is equally as important to us as having the right skills. We hire talented technologists who will uphold our values, take pride in representing sdg, and care about our customers and our community as much as we do because after all, we are all in this together. We are 100% employee-owned -- sdg's ESOP inspires every employee to think and act like an owner.
At sdg, we are defined and led by our core values and our success is based on staying true to these core values with every decision made, just as we have for nearly 30 years. Our core values are: superior client satisfaction, exceptional employee experience, and responsible corporate citizenship. While we have high expectations and hire hard-working individuals who care about our clients, we work hard to provide an exceptional employee experience for them and encourage participation in our community.
If giving client satisfaction, learning, collaboration, and community is important to you – sdg could be a great fit. We’re looking for talent to join our team – check out our website at solutiondesign.com for more details.
Providing our clients with superior client satisfaction is crucial to sdg’s success because our success comes from their success. Whether it’s new customer or one that’s worked with sdg for 20+ years, we'll prove it to them every day. After all, no one cares how much you know, until they know how much you care.
Our passion is working with engaged customers to enhance their business performance and create long lasting relationships with them. We work with clients with complex business problems in many different areas and with many different tech stacks. The more challenging, the better! What stays the same is our commitment to their success. We pride ourselves on going above and beyond expectations and making sure our clients understand how much we care.
We deeply care about the happiness of our employees. sdg wants to make sure employees know they are valued by creating an engaging, collaborative, and learning environment for all. There’s something for everyone. Tech talks, book club, Beer 5k, whiskey club, guitar club, founder’s lunches, Open Source North, fitness challenges, board game night, holiday party – to name a few. Our employees deserve a world-class work experience, and we work hard to make sure they receive it.
To keep our consultants connected with each other, sdg hosts several company events during the year. Whether it’s a happy hour, holiday party, or fantasy football league, we are always looking for ways to get you involved. We believe in work/life balance and value your time outside of the office.
Working as a consultant doesn't mean you have to miss out on benefits. All sdg’s consultants are full-time, salaried employees with benefits that include participation in our ESOP, competitive healthcare options, dental coverage, vision coverage, short and long-term disability - and generous maternity and paternity leave - and that's just the start.
It is no accident that we’ve been voted a “Best Place to Work” by the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal for ten years. We believe it’s the combination of solid leadership, employee involvement, open communication, work/life balance, and career development opportunities. We do our very best to provide employees with a unique culture and laid-back environment that brings all these elements to the table.
Supporting and engaging with our community is crucial to our success. We offer several opportunities throughout the year for sdg employees to get involved. Whether a team of sdg’ers is cooking food at Ronald McDonald House, or collecting back-packs and school supplies for kids in need we try and give everyone a chance to do something that makes our community better. We also look out for each other lending a helping hand when needed. It’s just what we do.
As a group of involved individuals by nature, we support the local tech community. Several employees have volunteered at different tech events around town including Hack the Gap, attended or run local meetups, provide mentorship, and volunteer during the Open Source North conference. Being a responsible corporate citizen is a shared value among employees.
When asked sdg’ers are always raising their hands to help.
We CTRL our future.
sdg is 100% employee-owned through an employee stock ownership program or ESOP. Employees are given shares through an annual distribution and our new stock price is announced at our annual shareholder meeting. Customers benefit from working with highly engaged, socially responsible consultants that truly care about results.
I have been working at Solution Design Group full-time (More than 8 years)
Work/Life balance is next to none. Always has created opportunity for growth. Clients love working with our consultants. Great success story. Always giving and helping in the community.
Company has so many events and gathering that it can be overwhelming if you try to make it to every event. I guess this creates different things for almost anyone's interest.
Advice to Management
Just keep doing what you're doing. It's working.
I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2+ months. I interviewed at Solution Design Group (Minneapolis, MN) in October 2017.
This was a longer process. Now that work here I understand why; they truly want to get to know you. There's a reason why it is so highly rated and why people stay working here for a long time, they are good people and they are looking for other good people to join them.
They hire the best of the best. They are looking for people who have the right skills, top of class, 10%ers, driven to do their best, are life long learners, and want to be engaged in the community. This is not a place for everyone and that's what they mean by the culture fit. They are looking for people who want to be engaged and a part of something. It's more than a 9-5 job, it's a community that does stuff outside the time at your clients. Be honest with yourself and be honest about the fit. It's okay if it isn't for you. It's not for everyone.
If this is a good fit for you and you do like the culture here, this will be the best job you've ever had!
First you'll most likely meet with a recruiter and they will talk to you about the company. If you both decide that you'd like to continue the process you'll most likely do another interview or a tech. They want to find out early on in the process if you have the skills that they are looking for. If you don't pass the tech but may be a good culture fit the recruiter will keep the door open. If they give you advice, you should take it because sdg has been known to hire people after they grow their skills. If you pass the tech, you'll most likely have a few other interviews. They really want to make sure it is a fit for both sdg and you. Be honest and open. Approach the interviews as yourself and just be who you are.
If this is a place that you want to work at then start making connections. They like to hire people they know or that they've worked with before. Everyone here is really open and friendly and they want to get to know people.
