- DARPA work org operates independently, with almost a startup feel but without the insane hours that a startup would expect

Advice to Management
Don't push the greater company processes and bureaucracy onto the DFA org- they are one of the few groups in the industry that have a fighting chance against the defense industry brain drain.
Also, you should consider incorporating equity into your compensation packages in order to compete against silicon valley for top talent, which is the differentiator for cutting edge r&d contracts. For example, I was very well compensated by defense contractor standards but was eventually poached by an offer with similar base and bonus pay, but also an equity package that was effectively a 45% raise. This was at an established, profitable company so we're not talking start up lottery-equity either. The DFA work is enjoyable and fulfilling so I have no doubt that evening the scales compensation-wise would have a massive impact on the level of talent you attract, and by extension the contracts you land.
I applied through other source. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Sotera Defense Solutions in December 2014.
A rep asked if I was interested in the position. I said yes. HR sent an offer letter, then contacted me by phone and email to let me know that I'd received their offer. I signed the letter and sent it back.
