South Carolina Federal Credit Union has provided convenient financial services since its founding in 1936. Fourteen naval shipyard workers contributed $5, for a total of $70. That small beginning sparked what is now one of the largest credit unions in the country, serving over 160,000 members.

  • 1936 - Chartered as Charleston Navy Yard Employees Federal Credit Union
  • 1960 - Changed name to Charleston Naval Shipyard (CNS) Federal Credit Union when membership was expanded to include Navy personnel working in the Navy Yard
  • 1965 - Opened at the Shipyard, becoming the first credit union in the state with our own facility
  • 1969 - Opened Naval Station branch
  • 1974 - Only credit union in South Carolina providing monthly statements and processing transactions with same-day receipts
  • 1979 - Opened a 5-story operations building at 2175 Credit Union Lane, in North Charleston
  • 1981 - Opened our first ATM. By 1984 there were 14 ATMs throughout the area
  • 1989 - Hurricane Hugo disrupted the lives of many members, the credit union forgave $83,000 in returned check fees and another $46,000 in service charges to assist those members in time of need
  • 1994 - Changed name to South Carolina Federal Credit Union to better represent service area
  • 2000 - Online Banking available to members free of charge
  • 2003 - Updated status to that of a community-chartered credit union, opening membership to all who live, work, and worship in Charleston, Dorchester, Berkeley, Calhoun, Georgetown, Orangeburg and most of Lexington and Richland counties

I have been working at South Carolina Federal Credit Union full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

I can't say enough good things about working at South Carolina Federal Credit Union. The organization has prioritized career growth and development for employees. They offer in-house career coaching and lots of opportunities for cross-training, job shadowing, and mentoring.

The benefits are fantastic... 10% match on 401k, zero premium health insurance option, tuition reimbursement, etc. The work/life balance from generous paid time off is amazing. On top of the PTO and paid holidays, we also get time off for our birthday, our work anniversary, for getting an annual physical, for volunteerism, etc.

They also offer many opportunities to get involved with the community... There are so many ways to volunteer and give back to worthy causes.

My favorite thing is that I am now treated as a person, not as a number. Senior leaders and other members of management know me by name, and they take the time to engage with me. They care about me and my coworkers, and they treat us with empathy. The organization also treats its members well, too. People come before profit here, so we are tasked with doing the right thing for our membership rather than just making a sale to earn a dollar. This truly is a best place to work!

    Cons

none that I can think of

    Advice to Management

Continue to take care of your people!

    Application

I applied online. The process took 4+ weeks. I interviewed at South Carolina Federal Credit Union in December 2019.

    Interview

The interview process is very thorough, especially for this position. An initial phone call to describe the position and expectations, then a couple behavioral assessments. Once those are complete, a computer simulation, in store interview and then a background screening process.

Doing research beforehand, I knew exactly what to expect throughout the process.
