I have been working at South Coast Community Services full-time (More than 10 years)

I love the environment and the people I work with. In fact I love my team so much I often contemplate retiring here. SCCS is focused on providing services to those who are at need and who may lack many other resources to have been given a proper fighting chance in important areas of their lives. It is really cool to be part of a program that exists to help those people. It is cool to feel like I am contributing to lifting others up, even if indirectly.

My favorite part of this job: from the day I started management noticed that I was able to self-direct, and they let me run with it. That trust has evolved into a position that I own. Even though we work as a team, I am trusted to do my job and in my own way - and that working relationship has resulted in high levels of success which I am proud of. Having that autonomy has literally made this one of the best career investments I could have made, and has made it a pleasure to come into work. I look forward to work - I cant remember the last time I didn't look forward to it.

The hardest part of the job is trying to fund a retirement as there is no 401k/matching. You're on your own there, which makes it hard to rationalize staying at times because I am essentially leveraging my current state of work happiness against my future self having a comfortable retirement. Also, the family healthcare options are financially out of reach. To cover my family with even a modest HMO costs more than I make, so my entire family is on MediCal. And the wages do not meet the cost of living in Orange County. In the 10 years working here I have never shaken this worry in the back of my mind that if I were to lose my job I would have literally nothing to show for it and be starting from zero.

That being said, some things are more important than money. I am happier here than I have been with any other company. If SCCS had a benefits package that was competitive to that of its industry peers it is no question that I would work here until I retire - and I am holding out hope that those days are to come.

    Advice to Management

Honestly I think you guys are doing a great job. Tech savvy and always forward thinking. Just please, please don't forget about your employees futures, especially the ones who have committed to this company for the long haul.

I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at South Coast Community Services (Colton, CA).

It was a group interview, there were 5 people in NY group.
There was a panel of 3 doing the interview.
They asked us questions and we all took turns answering them.
Then we had a written answer, where they asked a question but rather us verbally saying the answer, we had on minute to write down our answer.

    Interview Questions

    • Describe how you would handle the situation in a home where you're providing therapy and the clients dog keeps jumping on your lap and the siblings keep interrupting the session.   Answer Question
    • How would you entertain clients siblings so they won't interrupt therapy session.   Answer Question
