Mission: It’s our mission to make more happen for our associates, local communities and even the planet — through programs, policies and the values we live by.
We trust our associates and empower them to make suggestions, take ownership and shape their own career development. With the three distinct areas of business and so many opportunities within each business area (think sales, customer service, marketing, merchandising, advertising, etc.), careers can change and grow in record time.
Health plans, vacation time, rewards, discounts and learning opportunities are just a few of the benefits our associates enjoy. Staples knows that work-life balance is important to associates so we offer best-in-class benefits.
One of the best things about working for Staples is our culture. Why? Because we don’t just hire people for their skills, we look for the right cultural fit and people who share our values. In fact, it’s our mission to make more happen for our associates, local communities and even the planet through programs, policies and the values we live by.
We know how important it is for you to enjoy coming to work each day and are committed to providing a great workplace experience.
In 1985, Staples’ founder Tom Stemberg was working on a business proposal over the Fourth of July weekend when his typewriter ribbon broke. Because it was a holiday weekend, local suppliers and stationery stores were closed. After driving from store to store and not finding the correct ribbon, Tom came up with a way to make office supplies more accessible and affordable.
Ten months later, Staples, the first office superstore, was open for business.
Today, Staples is an industry leader in Facilities and Breakroom, Technology Supplies, Print Services, Promotional Products, Commercial Furniture and Office Products, and a recognized name across more than 26 countries.
At the very core of Staples is the entrepreneurial spirit that founded our company over 25 years ago − which means we live and breathe the energy of an always-growing, positive-thinking, fast-moving company. It’s this excitement and passion for great ideas and new thinking that inspires us to be the best we can be every day.

Our values were created with guidance and input from thousands of Staples associates. They guide how we work with our customers and each other. Our values are what inspire us to be the best we can be every day.
Diversity & Inclusion
We believe that differences in age, race, gender, gender identity, nationality, sexual orientation, physical ability, background and thinking style allow us to be more innovative as a company. We’re committed to maintaining a diverse and inclusive culture, from supporting associate resource groups to partnering with diversity suppliers.
Employee Groups & Mentoring
Meaningful working relationships, whether they are associate-driven organizations like our ARGs or one-to-one mentorships, offer our associates an opportunity to network, support one another, bring greater awareness to diversity and inclusion issues, and grow both professionally and personally.
Staples received a 100% score one Human Right Campaign Corporate Equality Index in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014.
We know that being a great company is about more than just sales and profit margins; it’s also about making a positive impact on society, associates and the planet. We’re dedicated to bringing awareness to and effecting meaningful change in the areas of Community, Environment, Ethics and Diversity and Inclusion.
Making a difference in the communities where our customers and associates live and work is something we care a lot about. We promote education and career skills development in countries across the globe through donations, grants, special programs and associate and customer volunteering.
2 Million & Change
In 2014, $2.4 million was directed to more than 1,000 organizations across 24 countries as part of a philanthropic initiative created by Staples Foundation. The initiative allows Staples associates around the world to direct funding to non-profit organizations focused on education or job skills. More than 9,000 associates have participated in directing donations to their organization of choice.
In the U.S., the program encourages community engagement by awarding larger grants to organizations where associates are engaged in volunteering or fundraising — up to $25,000 per organization. In 2014, U.S. grants were awarded to 990 local non-profit organizations in 47 states.
Grants supported a range of education and job skills programs, including tutoring for pediatric cancer patients, skills development for individuals with disabilities, school supplies, mentoring and more.
We help make more sustainable business practices happen. We do this by sourcing and selling eco-conscious products, improving our offering of recycling and other green services, maximizing our energy efficiency and renewable energy use, and eliminating waste.
At Staples, doing right is just as important as doing well. That's why we hold all our associates − from the boardroom to the store floor to the supply chain – to the highest standards of honesty, fairness and integrity. We also work hard to ensure all our associates, suppliers and partners understand and abide by our ethical standards.
I have been working at Staples full-time (More than a year)
Staples has a strong culture of giving back and helping associates. The investments made in the corporate headquarters show that the company is committed to providing a better work environment for associates and that their people are important to them even when going through a reinvention.
On-boarding process can be improved by having best practice documents and process documents easy to access on the intranet. A lot of time is spent wasted by new hires and managers trying to figure out how to set up work stations.
Advice to Management
Streamline and simplify processes making it easier to take risks and be truly innovative. Encourage managers to embrace a true work-life balance.
