Open Questions: Debbie Madden on Why Companies Should Hire More Women

    Q. You start your book, "Hire Women," with an anecdote about getting sent compensation information for 2,000 people at the company where you worked, and finding out that you were being paid 30 percent less than your lowest paid male peer. In that moment, were you shocked or did you kind of already know?

Stride Consulting – Why Work With Us?

Why Stride?
At our core, we are a learning culture who takes care of each other and acts with integrity. We are trusted technology partners with some of the biggest names revolutionizing the tech industry. From scaling startups to Fortune 500 companies, we help our clients reach their goals by providing collaborative high-end technical consulting, agile transformation, and product delivery.

We are privately funded and in control of our growth, and can do so at a pace that sustains our culture and prioritizes the happiness of our employees.

Our mission
Teach the World to Stride! We believe that high functioning development teams give an organization a real competitive advantage. We do this by literally coding side-by-side with our clients, providing our consultants with an unmatched opportunity to learn new industries, technologies, and best practices to help shape them into well-rounded practitioners to propel their careers.

Who We Are
We are a close-knit team of skilled Agilists, developers, product managers, and thought leaders who share a passion for continuous improvement through software. Autonomy, integrity, and collaboration form the foundation of our core beliefs.

What We Do
The Stride executive team has been growing and leading tech teams for over 20 years. We take pride in creating an environment that developers truly want to be a part of. We immerse ourselves in our clients’ culture, help them create high-quality code, and set their business up for long term success.

We love company socials! You can find us around a large table playing codenames, competing for the best dish at a cookoff, learning to paint abstract art, playing games at the barcade around the corner, at Brooklyn Boulders for a good climbing sesh, downstairs for an ad hoc happy hour, the list goes on!

In 2019 we took charter buses and headed upstate to Camp Stride for our annual company retreat with a weekend full of relays, games, kayaking, go-karting, ghost stories around the fire pit, and relaxing. Planned by Striders for Striders.

Honesty: We are radically transparent with each other and our clients. We practice total honesty because the truth can be hard to reveal even with complete information, but it's almost impossible to reveal when there is no honesty.

Humility: We can always learn from others, no matter how experienced we are. We believe that no one individual is better than any other individual. We embrace the fact that we don't have all the answers, and we know that we never will.

Respect: We listen when others speak, and we respond when others inquire. We embrace different worldviews. We respect others’ opinions even if we don’t agree with them. We respect our peers, our clients, and most importantly, ourselves.

Willingness to Help Others: We make time when possible to assist others in need. Often this is other Striders and our clients, but this value extends into the community as well.

Learn from Failure: Our failures are our most potent opportunities for learning. We reflect on and learn from our failures in order to continuously improve.

Our Commitment to Diversity & Inclusion

In 2014, I founded Stride Consulting on the premise that all teams have the potential to be high-functioning, empowered, and happy. As we grow, it is important to our culture and our business that we strengthen our commitment to diversity and inclusion. Our team and all teams that Stride works with will benefit, as a result. Diverse teams solve complex problems better, perform better, and have higher morale.

To me, being truly committed to diversity and inclusion means doing the right thing when no one is looking. It means equal pay for equal work. It means having a zero-tolerance policy on harassment. It means giving everyone a voice and listening when they speak. It means sacrificing revenue by being willing to fire a vendor or client for failing to uphold our code of conduct in order to maintain a safe working environment for all

Diversity and Inclusion is not something you can ever consider “done.” It is not a checkbox on a to-do list. It is a mindset, a way of conducting ourselves day in and day out.

At Stride, we pride ourselves on working hard to combat unconscious bias both in our hiring process and in our everyday work. We don’t assume we’ve gotten it all perfect. Instead, we continuously look for areas of improvement. Above all, we are humble and willing to learn every single day.

I have been working at Stride Consulting full-time (More than a year)

Great company for improving technical skills. Stride sends devs to a large range of team types and technical problems, so if I want to learn a new language / framework / design pattern, even if it isn't relevant to my current client work, Stride gives time and incentives for me to do that.

I grow leadership / big picture organizational skills without having to take a manager path. As a consultant I feel more empowered to help improve a team's processes and efficiencies. Stride invests in devs learning agile concepts and how to give feedback/guidance to a team's leadership.

I learn more here than I ever have. Striders are motivated to learn/get out of their comfort zone (switching clients means adapting to new environments). There is a diversity of expertise and people take the time to level each other up so we can all bring top skills to any client situation.

Stride tries to match devs with work that suits them, and gets feedback/moves people around, but there are no guarantees that every client you work with will be a perfect fit.

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Stride Consulting.

They gave me a take home coding test, I submitted it and received zero useful feedback. It was a generic response that they decided not to move forward and told me I could reapply in X months if I wanted to. Kind of a waste of time since I was hoping to at least get some useful feedback out of it.
