  • SusieCakes is looking for a hands-on, responsive, Payroll and HR Specialist to ensure efficiency of payroll, benefits, and other HR components. The ideal candidate will have strong attention to detail while simultaneously managing and improving many facets of HR. Ideal candidates will have 3-5 years or more managing payroll for 250+ full-time team members, preferably with experience managing the full-cycle of benefits, workers compensation, and leaves of absence. We are a fun and dynamic organization with plans to open multiple new bakeries in current and new markets. SUSIE'S STORY

SusieCakes’ founder, Susan Sarich, grew up in Chicago, where she was called Susie by her two beloved grandmothers, Mildred and Madeline.

Every day Susie would come home from school to enjoy her grandmothers’ company over a glass of milk and a fresh baked treat. This daily baking ritual and special time together in the kitchen left a lasting impression. When Susie grew up to become Susan and moved to the West Coast, she brought along her grandmothers’ carefully recorded recipes on handwritten 3×5 cards. The pure and simple connection those recipes fostered helped Susan form SusieCakes bakeries to share her experience with others.

Through SusieCakes, Susan honors Mildred and Madeline: both in her dedication to their baking traditions, and her commitment to providing women with progressive careers in the food & hospitality industry.

If you can’t spell it, we don’t bake with it.
Just like our grandmothers, we do not use any mixes, artificial preservatives, or trans-fats in our products. We bake our products from scratch using only the freshest and finest ingredients.


Susan built the SusieCakes’ business model specifically as one that allows for women and men of all ages to have an opportunity for a progressive career, without having to sacrifice relationships with family and friends or time for one’s self. 

Women of her grandmothers’ generation had little choice in what they did, and our bakery’s commitment to equal career opportunities for all honors the sacrifices that generation made for us to have today’s opportunities.

Today, SusieCakes takes pride in offer providing one-on-one training to our team members so that they can fulfill Susan's promise. In our bakeries, you can find career progression, whether you have no experience or are a seasoned professional in our industry.

Additionally, throughout the years, we’ve donated millions of end-of-day cupcakes & cookies to local charities & food banks (where available).

    Pros

    If you're looking for upward mobility, training and a place where you can truly make a career, SusiecCakes is one of the best in the hospitality/culinary industry. They provide ample education/training for employees and invest in those that want to move up. There is fantastic work/life balance, a rarity in the industry. This is a company where you can make lifelong colleagues and friends. And who doesn't love a place where sampling amazing desserts is part of the job description? Fast-paced and fun, a career not just a job, SusieCakes is a place I loved being and will always cherish.

    Cons

    With any business, there can be growing pains on occasion and change can be difficult. But despite any changes, SusieCakes has stayed true to the values over the years and has never compromised on the quality of their goods and service.

    Application

    I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at SusieCakes (Carlsbad, CA) in August 2018.

    Interview

    I was called and asked a few questions about my resume, basically a quick phone interview. This happened about a week after I applied for the job through Indeed.com. Next, I was asked to go to the bakery for a face-to-face interview, which took about 30-45 mins (situational questions/experience), and a stage (or working interview), which took about 2 hours (execution of recipes). After that was done, I was told that other interviews where scheduled for the week (mine was on a Monday), and that a decision would be made on Friday. Friday came and I received a call asking if I could go in for a second interview the next day with the Head Bakers boss. This was a few more situational questions, but mostly an interview on personality/experience. I was then told that I would be notified within 48 hours either way. After receiving a call requesting an additional reference, I was offered a job with SusieCakes. I couldn't be more excited, based on the interview process alone I can tell that the team I'll be working with are going to be amazing.
