Our History

To help ensure that they will be here for the next generation, physicians and hospitals in Northern California—along with the communities they serve—decided to join together. Sutter Health is the not-for-profit network we're creating.

We started out as independent health care providers, but forces like rising costs and declining payment for services have made it difficult for hospitals and physicians to continue operating on their own. Just in the last decade, more than 100 Northern California hospitals have had to close their doors, and the majority of state's physician groups are facing significant problems as well.

Our Historical Roots

While Sutter Health as it is today was created through the January 1996 merger of Sacramento-based Sutter Health and Bay Area-based California Healthcare System, the foundation of Sutter Health began taking shape well over 100 years ago, as independent hospitals opened to meet the health care needs of their local communities.

As a not-for-profit, our view of innovation might differ from others. Because we care deeply about people and communities, our team has an inner drive—a pioneering spirit—to transform care quality and access for the better. We believe health care should be more compassionate, easier to understand, and more accessible and affordable to all. We must innovate to fulfill these promises.

Imagination, analysis and empathy actively fuel our drive to find solutions and improve. We move fast. And we create and try new concepts often.

We also look at innovation holistically—it’s more than the latest gadget or technology. We’re interested in how innovation can improve a person’s experience in the doctor’s office or the health of an entire community.

Stats and Facts

Innovation occurs across our network. We innovate through:

  • Community Partnerships
  • Advanced Technologies
  • Care on Your Terms
  • Research
  • Operational Performance

Community Partnerships

People need care beyond our hospital and clinic walls. We’re innovating how care is delivered by taking medicine to the streets. Our Street Nurse meets homeless people in parks and alleys to provide free medical care and connect them with vital social services. We also have partnerships with many organizations to improve mental health care.

Care on Your Terms

We’re opening Walk-In Care centers across Northern California to provide same-day appointments for everyday illnesses. And we’re looking for solutions to eliminate those little things in health care that frustrate people. For example, we’re helping people get prescriptions more conveniently, giving people faster access to their office visit notes and providing aftercare instructions that are easy to understand and follow.

Research

More than 20 years ago, one of our surgeons was the first in the nation to operate on a person using a robot, and the Smithsonian inducted his device into its halls. Now, minimally invasive surgery using robotics is commonplace. Additionally, our 2017 research commitment includes a state-of-the-art Biobank, representing one of the largest efforts by a health system in the U.S. to link genetic information to electronic health record data as a way to increase the pace of discoveries.

Operational Performance

We're streamlined business and support services to operate more efficiently and improve customer service. Since 2012, we achieved $200 million in cost savings and other benefits. By 2017, we expect that amount to grow to $300 million annually.

Sutter Health Design & Innovation

In 2015, we welcomed our Chief Design and Innovation Officer, Chris Waugh, to help lead a team to transform the way we deliver care at Sutter Health. The Innovation team and the Innovation Hatchery aspires to make healthcare more simple, engaging and human for every patient.

Mike and Judy Gaulke have generously gifted $20 million to Sutter Health's Innovation Hatchery. The couple's long history with Sutter dates back to Mike's late 20s when he received cancer care at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation.

I worked at Sutter Health full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Top quality people at Sutter - good leadership, noble mission, well positioned and capitalized. Culture of helpfulness, integrity, compassion and hard work.

    Cons

Unions are always beating their drum to represent more staff and they generally twist the facts and don't tell the truth about the organization - one can ignore them but it still grates on you because it's unfair.

    Advice to Management

Focus on clinical excellence, customer experience excellence, partnering with outside and internal innovators, and competitive costs and prices.

    Application

I applied through other source. The process took 3 days. I interviewed at Sutter Health in February 2018.

    Interview

Contacted by Regional Director of Rad. Onc. And had phone interview with her and an RN. Followed by an in person panel interview with a doctor and 4 staff members. Never, have I had such a professional interview. They didn’t read questions off of a piece of paper, which seemed to be the trend.

    Interview Questions

    • Why did i want to be in Radiation Oncology.
I was asked about my career history and why being a nurse was important to me. Very relaxed and felt welcome to be a part of the team.   Answer Question
