THE THIRD FLOOR Visualization – Why Work For Us?

Our mission nurturing an artistic community that strengthens stories and

ideas through collaborative visualization.

We are the world’s leading visualization studio.

We use the virtual world to imagine, plan and problem solve for stories in film, television, games, VR and themed attractions.

We started out in 2004 with a handful of dedicated artists.

Now we’ve grown into a global company, partnering with our clients in locations like London, South Africa, Ireland, Australia and Canada.

We are a company of artists, for artists.

Our founders still work as artists, supervisors and creative directors on projects.

We are a community of award-winning talent.

We love helping the world’s leading creatives realize their vision.

Film & TV

We visualize your story at every stage of its creation.

From storyboards to post-production, we collaborate with you to explore your narrative, design shots and plan technical solutions.

Before your project is even greenlit, you can test your concept with a custom-made previs trailer.

Our “pitchvis” trailers have been used to help greenlight Godzilla (2014), Men in Black 3, Jack the Giant Slayer, Oz: The Great and Powerful and others.

Storyboards & Animatics

To kick off the visualization process, our storyboard artists sketch story beats for each scene.

The editorial department cuts these shots into animatics for review.

Asset & World Building

Next we build the world your story lives in.

In Maya’s 3D virtual space, we generate each scene’s environment and elements.

With the assets in place, our artists animate the story and shots. The 3D visualization allows you to explore every action and angle. Previs is your sandbox and stress-test before you shoot.

Once previs captures your vision, we run a technical analysis to see how the story can be physically shot.

Our workflow stores all technical information (lens type, camera distance, size of a greenscreen, speed of a vehicle) and produces blueprints for physical production.

Virtual Production

Our iterative, nonlinear virtual production workflow merges virtual environments and characters with your physical production.

We use imagery and 3D spatial data generated during previs to provide services such as virtual location scouting and on-set visualization.

After production, we combine the previs elements with the live action photography to quickly preview the film before implementing final VFX.

Postvis provides a post-production blueprint for your VFX team and a comprehensive look at the film for test screenings.

Our company was started by artists – for artists.

Our goal is to create a collaborative and thriving environment where people can reach their greatest potential.

We cast each of our shows, matching artists with projects they are passionate about.

From VR, films, theme parks and more, we have a variety of projects where we can utilize your unique skills and interests.

Lunch and learns, guest speakers, training sessions, and scholarship opportunities are all the status quo around here to help you grow in your craft and your career.

We could run down the list of everything we offer like benefits, paid Parental Leave and a 401(k), but we think our perks best exemplify our company culture. Take a look and decide for yourself:

  • Monday breakfast
  • Wednesday Coffee- Starbucks or Coffee Bean?
  • Friday lunch
  • Fun Fridays:

I worked at THE THIRD FLOOR Visualization (Less than a year)

    - The studio culture seems more focused on the work, rather than trying to sell you on how special the studio is, how lucky you are to be there, etc. I didn't experience the Kool-Aid drinking that's expected at many studios. Being the big dog in previz, a relatively unsung and unglamorous part of the industry, is likely a part of that.
    - Paid me my asking rate. Met some people who felt underpaid, but my experience was they paid me the going industry rate for my experience level.
    - Health benefits are kicking in for contractors. That's pretty exceptional.
    - Decent perks like snacks, coffee, breakfast and lunch once a week.
    - Congenial production and support staff.
    - They provide a lot of employment to a lot of people, which is increasingly unusual in Los Angeles.
    - They pay their OT.
    - Desire to avoid excessive OT and especially weekend work seemed genuine.
    - Founders of the company are accessible and continue to be active in doing the work.
    - I liked being able to walk the grounds of La Brea Tar Pits and LACMA at lunch.

    - Mostly contract work, with short notice for when jobs start, and uncertain end dates. I know people who have been there steadily for years, but the nature of TTF's work means they can't maintain a significant permanent staff. You have to understand and accept that going in.
    - Work environment is spartan and utilitarian. People move workstations all the time. No privacy when you're sitting side-by-side in rows with others. That's fine with me, but if you're impressed by studios that put a lot of money into architecture and decoration and individual offices, you may be disappointed.
    - Not the best place to build a demo reel if you want to work at other studios doing more finished work.
    - On the previz side, it would be great if there was more work that wasn't typical big effects super hero movies, but you do the work you're awarded.

    Advice to Management

What you're doing seems to be working. Hope the foray into VR goes well.

I applied online. I interviewed at THE THIRD FLOOR Visualization (Los Angeles, CA).

The interview should have been my first clue. It was a honey-pot full of promises. It sounded too good to be true and it is!
If you are a professional and value your career path. Do NOT accept an offer from The Third Floor Visualization.

    • How much money do you want..? Was pretty much it, they didn't care about the person they were interviewing at all. Or my goals or career path. They were only interested in what concerned them.   1 Answer
