TRAC – Why Work For Us?

TRAC’s Story

The genesis of TRAC Intermodal was the formation in 1968 of "Interpool Limited," a container leasing company that provided dry freight containers under long term leases to the world's largest shipping lines.  In 1968, with a fleet of approximately 35,000 chassis, the founders of Interpool Limited formed "TRAC Lease, Inc." in order to take advantage of the growing demand on the part of the shipping lines and trucking companies for chassis rentals.  Two years later, "Interpool, Inc." was formed as the parent company of the container and chassis businesses and in 1993, after a successful public offering, Interpool, Inc. began trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol "IPX."

Interpool, Inc. remained a public company for the next 14 years until it was acquired in July, 2007 by funds managed by affiliates of Fortress Investment Group LLC (NYSE: FIG).  Upon the Fortress acquisition, the chassis business was rebranded as "Seacastle Chassis" to identify its connection with its affiliated container leasing and ship leasing businesses.  In August, 2010, following several events including the expansion of the company's operating capabilities, the company was again rebranded, this time as "TRAC Intermodal."

Since 2012, TRAC has been steadily building its chassis fleet size by acquiring assets from Ocean Carriers who have been divesting equipment and focusing on their core business of maritime commerce.

As of 2015, TRAC Intermodal remains a privately held company and its active fleet consists of more than 180,000 chassis.  TRAC Intermodal is the largest provider of marine intermodal equipment in North America and offers daily chassis rentals, long-term and short-term leasing through extensive neutral pool programs, as well as chassis pool management services.  From its beginnings in 1968 through today, the company continues to succeed by fostering a culture of teamwork, accountability, integrity and innovation.

What is Intermodal? What is a chassis? And what roles do they play in the Global Supply Chain?

  • Intermodal shipping is the movement of cargo via multiple modes of transportation, including ships, trains and trucks
  • Shippers of products ranging from homebuilding supplies to frozen fast food across the world have found intermodal to be a more reliable, less expensive and often faster alternative to moving freight strictly by road or rail
  • The practice saves shippers 10 percent to 30 percent over trucking, and more loads were moved in intermodal containers in 2014 than ever before
  • Chassis are an integral component of intermodal transportation; a chassis is a rectangular, wheeled, steel frame (typically with eight tires) built specifically to transport cargo containers over land between ocean-going vessels, railroad ramps, distribution centers, warehouses and other delivery points served by motor carriers

Did you know that most goods imported into the United States are moved in shipping containers mounted on top of chassis?

TRAC is focused on satisfying customer needs in the "First and Last Mile" by providing high-quality roadable chassis in the right place, at the right time.

TRAC chassis are used to transport shipping containers, which have standard sizes ranging from between 20'-53' in length, between ocean going vessels, rail raods, distribution centers and their final destinations.

What does TRAC Offer?

  • A full range of chassis, including pool chassis and specialized equipment outfitted with OEM radial tires, GPS, automatic tire airing systems and LED lights
  • Availability in virtually all major marine and domestic shipping hubs nationally
  • Daily chassis rentals, accessed through TRAC Connect, our online marketplace
  • Short-term and Long-Term chassis leases; we offer operating leases of varying durations, typically between one and eight years
  • Industry-leading Pool & Fleet Management Technology Platform - PoolStat for chassis tracking and billing

Karol Cano – Billing Supervisor

“I have been working for TRAC Intermodal for the past 5 years and it has been a wonderful experience. TRAC values the hard work of its employees and provides exceptional growth opportunities and tools to develop skills to expand your career within the company. I started as a data cleansing specialist and was mentored the right way, which resulted in my personal career growth within the company. Now I am a billing supervisor mentoring my team with the same values and encouragement I received.”

Marygrace Pinizzotto – Senior Director, Business PerformanceMP

“After joining TRAC, it was apparent that others valued my opinions and transportation experience. Senior management welcomes a fresh look at existing processes and identifying improvements. I chose TRAC because of the company’s commitment to developing my career.”

“I’ve been with TRAC since 2010 and am proud to be the company’s first female service center manager. My role in Woodbridge, NJ, involves overseeing the scrapping of chassis and the remanufacture of axles.
