T.W. Ponessa & Associates has a formal internship program for both undergraduate & graduate students in psychology. Internships are also available for pre-doctoral and post-doctoral psychology students. These internships are tailored to individual and corporate needs. Currently, the internship program is not APA or APPIC approved. Bachelor's & Master’s level interns are not paid and do not receive stipends.
The focus of the internship program is to transition students into professional therapists by providing a protected educational environment, where they integrate classroom skills with clinical practice. This is facilitated through direct services, observations, and individual and group supervision. Interns are provided one hour of weekly individual supervision and 1.5 hours of group supervision, along with opportunities for departmental supervision and monthly specialized training.
There are internship opportunities in the general outpatient, drug and alcohol, school-based, and partial hospitalization programs. In addition, there are internship sites in Lancaster, Lebanon, York, and Harrisburg. Programs and locations are determined by hiring directors once the intern is accepted into the program. The T.W. Ponessa internship program is not cohort-based. Interns can start at any time in the calendar year.
Interns videotape at least three sessions over the course of the internship and the tapes are reviewed with a supervisor to identify strengths, weaknesses, and adherence to a theoretical model. Interns also develop a caseload of 6-15 clients (depending on the program) and learn documentation skills related to outpatient therapy.
The focus of the Undergraduate Internship Program is to have students develop an understanding of working within the mental health field. Undergraduate interns will shadow professionals within the Behavioral Health Rehabilitation Services program, which provides in school, home and community services for children/adolescents that have significant behavioral health disorders. The age range of the clients span from age 3 - 21, with most clients between the ages of 5 – 12. The BHRS staff work intricately with clients and their caregivers. There will be a variety of experiences that will give interns a wide range of cultural experiences. Undergraduate interns will attend supervision groups and trainings that are available at TW Ponessa and Associates Counseling Services.
Internships are available at all TW Ponessa and Associates Counseling Services locations, which includes Chester, Lancaster, Lebanon, Dauphin, York, and Cumberland/Perry counties. The location is determined by the Undergraduate Internship Coordinator once the intern is accepted into the program. Students in psychology, social work and other related fields can complete the application process found on this website.
I have been working at TW Ponessa & Associates Counseling Services full-time (More than 10 years)
This company makes it a priority to care about employees, not only as a whole but individually as well. I have been employed here for 15 plus years and throughout my employment, I have always appreciated the recognition of my service, loyality and commitment to the work. Administration makes noticeable efforts to support and appreciate their employees as best as possible. I have never felt like I wouldn't be heard if I had concerns and I have always felt like I am an important part of the team, no matter what position I held. This company has a strong commitment to serving their clients as well as the staff they employ.
Being a large company spread through multiple counties, it is difficult to find opportunities to get everyone together as a whole. It can be a challenge for employees to participate in company activites if distance is an issue. I do however appreciate that the company continues to try to offer team building and company sponsered events outside of work. I hope we can see more of that.
Advice to Management
Continue to value all of your employees and recognize their contribution to the success of the company. It is much appreciated!
I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at TW Ponessa & Associates Counseling Services (Carlisle, PA) in November 2017.
Straight forward. Use "what would you do" scenarios. To think of situations you have been in an performed well during conflict. I filled out an application, and then was interviewed by 1 person.
