I have been working at Tacoma Community College part-time (More than a year)
The people are nice and dedicated to their job while remaining fairly laid back. The full-time employees are nice as well. As far as the job, most of the tutees are easy to work with and the results are rewarding and meaningful. Being part of the personal development process for others is a definite plus. Its a good job for students or people in between positions, not for a long term career.
It's minimum wage for a job that pays around $35 per hour for free-lancers. If you are in it for the money then I suggest tutoring independently. The management can be high-strung at times as well. While on the clock the tutors have to be doing something, even if that something is ultimately useless.
Advice to Management
Be more organized in what projects tutors do while not tutoring. A little more direction could produce some really good results.
I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Tacoma Community College (Tacoma, WA) in August 2010.
Very simple process. I sent a letter of interest in working there and in less than a week I was scheduled for an interview. The interview itself was actually very short, about 20-30 minutes with very standard questions. The program director was very friendly, which kept me at ease. I think that this interview process was overall a great experience
No negotiations, it is strait base pay of about 9.09/hr
