Our story begins in 1781, when Chobei Takeda 1 began selling traditional Japanese and Chinese herbal medicines in Doshomachi, the medicine district of Osaka, Japan. His small shop bought medicines from wholesalers, divided them into smaller batches, and sold them to local medicine merchants and doctors. He had a reputation for business integrity, and quality products and services—a tradition that lives on at Takeda.

Access to innovative medicines and quality healthcare is vital to the well-being of people, yet it remains a significant issue around the world. It's estimated that one in three people in developing countries can't get essential medicines on a regular basis. Our therapeutics focus is oncology, gastroenterology, and the central nervous system, as well as life-saving vaccines.  

With our bold, new Access to Medicines (AtM) strategy, we are expanding our existing commitments to enhance global health so that eligible patients in evolving healthcare systems can have access to our innovative and potentially life-saving medicines—even if their ability to pay for the full cost of treatment is limited.

Of the 38 million people who die from noncommunicable diseases each year, 28 million of these deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.
