I have been working at TaxJar full-time (More than a year)
Because the team is fully remote and communication is mostly asynchronous, I have ultimate flexibility in my workday. This allows me to structure my day around the activities I want to do, rather than the work the I have to do. The benefits and compensation are great; the company really cares about each individual employee and does what it can to promote health and happiness.
The team is amazing! This the most talented group of people I've worked with. Everyone on the team is driven and takes ownership of their domain in the company. Even though I'm not in a "leadership" role, my voice is heard when it comes to making decisions on the direction if the product and company.
The company does two meetups during the year called JarFest, which is the most fun I've ever had at a company event, where you get to really bond with the team.
Not so much a downside of TaxJar but of remote work in general, it can be lonely. It's obviously a trade-off for saving time commuting, getting to be around family, flexible schedule, etc. TaxJar does a lot to help here too with video meetings to encourage chatting and such, but it's definitely something I have to be more intentional about than when working in an office.
Again, not really a con to me, but I do think being self-motivated is critically important to working here. Since you are given a lot of autonomy, you have to be sure you're getting enough done.
Advice to Management
Keep up the great work! The company you've built is truly amazing to work for, and I fully believe in the direction this company is moving.
I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at TaxJar.
Didn't get an offer, but it was a positive experience. TaxJar seems like a cool place to work with smart, positive people. The process was fast with good communication.
The interview process started with a few phone screens, moved onto an hour-long technical "code challenge" with a Senior engineer, then an hour-ish long video call with the CTO.
