"Our team is passionate about improving people's lives through education, so we are looking for teammates who both dream big and know how to get stuff done,” said CEO Joe Holland. We're thrilled to be featured in Built In NYC's latest article! http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vQSU3
Teachers Pay Teachers (TpT) was founded in 2006 by Paul Edelman. After spending years as an educator in the New York City public schools system, Paul decided to solve a real problem he struggled with every day – finding and sharing educational content with colleagues. What began as a humble exchange for teachers looking to share lesson plans has since exploded into an education powerhouse where teachers have created more than 3 million resources for all aspects of PreK-12 education.
At TpT, we are looking for good people to do great things. Our dreams are big and our passion to make them a reality inspires us to do our best every day. We work collaboratively to solve important problems and build new products to serve our large and growing user base. And we are always teaching and learning. For example, employees lead lunch and learns on a variety of interesting topics related to their expertise. And we also have a company wide hack week at the end of every quarter where you can partner with colleagues from across the organization.
Many of us come from some of the best known tech companies in New York: Google, Facebook, Etsy, Foursquare, LinkedIn, and Venmo, to name a few. Many of us come with years of classroom experience as teachers, bringing a unique teaching lens that permeates the culture. With employees from varied backgrounds, companies, and experiences, allows us to incorporate diverse perspectives into our work to create the best products and experience possible for educators.
Engineers at TpT build things that make a meaningful and immediate impact, work to solve big problems at scale, and are surrounded by colleagues who have a deep curiosity for learning.
Make an immediate impact
At TpT, engineers get to see the impact of their work in real-time. Beginning with user calls with educators, listening to feedback, and making product and code iterations, the work TpT engineers begin today will help to improve the experience of educators tomorrow.
Solve important problems at scale
With a large and growing platform of over 5 million educators, the work that every TpT engineer does matters. As we continue growth worldwide, TpT engineers have the opportunity to take on exciting projects and own them from start to finish.
Join a culture of teaching and learning
Teaching and learning is one of our core tenants at TpT and it’s instilled throughout the company on many levels. Are you interested in teaching middle schoolers how to code? Do you want to develop your speaking skills and present at a conference? Teaching and learning at TpT is embedded in our culture and the opportunities are endless.
I have been working at Teachers Pay Teachers full-time
I've worked (and consulted) for many technology companies and Teachers Pay Teachers is a truly unique organization. Not only is their engineering culture top-notch from a technical and collaborative perspective, but their commitment to diversity, transparent communication, and growing engineers really makes them stand out. And, to top it off, they have a really successful product that is having a huge positive impact on the K-12 world.
If you're looking for a software engineering role where you can grow and make a difference in the world, I highly recommend Teachers Pay Teachers!
The only "con" I can think of is that there are a lot of interesting technical and growth challenges and Teachers Pay Teachers will need to be extra careful about focusing to ensure they can deliver valuable improvements consistently.
Advice to Management
Stay true to Teachers Pay Teachers values as the organization continues to expand and explore new opportunities for growth.
I applied online. The process took a week. I interviewed at Teachers Pay Teachers (New York, NY) in May 2018.
Interview process consisted of one initial screen for which we had the option to do a video chat or visit the office. I chose the visit and it was really exciting to meet the team. Then I was called for a full day of on-site interview. The day consisted of 5 interviews, 3 of which involved coding or design questions. One of them was with Customer Experience Manager which gave a great insight into the impact of TpT on it's customers(teachers). They also took me out for lunch where I got the chance to have informal conversation with the team members and to get to know the company better.
One most amazing thing I experienced was after I received the offer, I received congratulatory emails from everyone I met during the interview process. This is an amazing place to work with even more amazing people.
