I have been working at Tennessee Department of Children's Services full-time (More than 3 years)
above-average opportunity for advancement, meaningful work, somewhat flexible schedule, job security, decent pay with an almost constant opportunity for overtime
DCS has difficulty firing bad (as in horrible) workers, including supervisors, if they have been employed for several years+. The work is extremely stressful and sometimes even heartbreaking in nature! There is very high-turnover and almost constant internal-restructuring. Caseloads are ridiculously large at times, and new demands are regularly placed on works. Work/life balances are difficult to establish or maintain.
Advice to Management
If you don't know a job well enough to do it, don't supervise others doing in that job. Work on employee retention and hire more works.
I applied in-person. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Tennessee Department of Children's Services (Clarksville, TN) in February 2013.
The interview process was racking in the fact that everyone seems to have a judgmental position. Nobody looks at you and continues to scribble on paper. It is like you're on death row. I was contacted around 6pm to schedule an interview, which was oddly unprofessional and should have been an indicator of what was to come.
