The Agora, or "Agora" as it is commonly called, is often mistaken for a relatively small “publishing company” out of Baltimore, Maryland. In fact, what began as a half-dozen like-minded writers in a small city row home is now ... Read more

Mission: The Agora is no longer a company itself, but rather a community of companies born of the same vision and philosophy. The Agora Companies celebrate the virtue of thinking independently and taking individual responsibility for your health, wealth, and future.

The Agora Companies – Why Work With Us?

Agora and its affiliated companies include offices in 17 countries worldwide with more than 1,300 employees.  We are also one of Baltimore's largest employers, with over 400 people working in our Mount Vernon offices.

We are always looking for ambitious, enthusiastic, and creative individuals who are looking for a place where they can be themselves and use their knowledge and energy in an environment that encourages the growth of new ideas from employees at all levels.

Our unique culture is a large contributor to our success and our long-term positioning as an industry frontrunner. But it’s our people that are responsible for creating and continuing that culture. When a company grows as large as we have in a relatively brief period of time, there are challenging demands for strong and distinctive talent.

Whether the person that discovers the idea is a veteran guru or a rookie is meaningless to us. Agora considers the quality of an idea - not the authority of the person suggesting the idea - to continually have dominance.  Some of us are doctors, some of us are dreamers. But we are all passionate, dedicated forward thinkers always willing to go the extra mile to offer insightful solutions for living a better life. We don’t believe in protocol. We want to continue to be a place where the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well. And we believe that by providing an environment that shows employees that we believe in them, we provide them the confidence and stability they desire from a career standpoint. This extraordinary environment allows our employees to take the necessary risks to uncover the ultimate rewards.

I have been working at The Agora Companies full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

If you have the opportunity to work at one of The Agora Companies.... take it. I've been here for 3 years and I'm not sure I could ever leave. I feel spoiled by how supportive the culture is. The work is rewarding and interesting...and you're encouraged to keep learning and trying new things. There's a lot of opportunities to grow both professionally and personally.

    Cons

It's growing so fast that things change a lot. So if you hate change and want every day to be the same....it might not be the right place for you.

    Web Developer Interview

    Application

The process took 1 day. I interviewed at The Agora Companies (Baltimore, MD) in March 2009.

    Interview

I was interviewed only by the software development team lead. He sold me on a change management process. Agora's software development process was traditionally of generating use cases and farming out the development work to contractors. The stated intention was to build an in house software team of talented, experienced developers to take over software development from the outsourcing trend. I answered very few questions other than to explain my resume and was offered a position.

    Interview Questions

    Negotiation

It was a contract to hire position through a recruiter called TEK Systems at a pre-negotiated hourly rate.
