Underwriting Matters at The Hanover


Underwriters: the masters of risk assessment and superb relationship managers

Successful underwriters typically have a balance of strong analytical thinking and problem solving skills as well as solid interpersonal skills – both aptitudes are relied upon heavily in this entrepreneurial role. As an underwriter, you’ll apply your technical risk knowledge learned through formal training, hands-on learning and experience, to: evaluate incoming applications for insurance, make decisions about coverages and premium (price) amounts based on the application, and ultimately determine whether or not to “underwrite the risk.” 

Key responsibilities:

Underwrite risk information to determine risk acceptability and communicate resulting decisions to agents.

Develop agency partnerships and agency management skills.

Ensure agents understand the business market direction, underwriting standards and new business risk profile to generate a flow of quality new business submissions and retention business.

Business cultivation: seek out new opportunities with existing agents as well as new agency appointments.

Analyze financial information to determine performance, identify business trends and recommend process improvements.

Agency/territory management: manage agents in designated territory to ensure that targets for new business, renewal retention, loss ratio, and mix of business are achieved.

    You can make your own way here. Coworkers are the best. I’ve worked here 14 years and the company has treated me well in pay, benefits and opportunity. They are progressive and embrace all ways to continue to improve.


    No cons beyond normal every day work “stuff”. I’m moving on but that has nothing to do with this company. I will miss everyone and remain forever grateful as well as proud to have worked here.

    Advice to Management

    Jack Roche is a talented leader who should have been Fred’s successor. The short time in between damaged our culture. So grateful we again have a leader who not only holds the bar high but leads by example and values the employees.

    I applied online. I interviewed at The Hanover Insurance Group (Atlanta, GA) in May 2018.


    Initially, there was a phone interview which led to an in person interview. The interview consisted of a shadowing of the position I was interviewing for, followed by two additional phone interviews in a conference room by upper management and finally a one on one interview with a local manager. It lasted approximately 3 hours. Very relaxed environment.
