Underwriting Matters at The Hanover


Underwriters: the masters of risk assessment and superb relationship managers

Successful underwriters typically have a balance of strong analytical thinking and problem solving skills as well as solid interpersonal skills – both aptitudes are relied upon heavily in this entrepreneurial role. As an underwriter, you’ll apply your technical risk knowledge learned through formal training, hands-on learning and experience, to: evaluate incoming applications for insurance, make decisions about coverages and premium (price) amounts based on the application, and ultimately determine whether or not to “underwrite the risk.”


Key responsibilities:

  • Underwrite risk information to determine risk acceptability and communicate resulting decisions to agents.
  • Develop agency partnerships and agency management skills.
  • Ensure agents understand the business market direction, underwriting standards and new business risk profile to generate a flow of quality new business submissions and retention business.
  • Business cultivation: seek out new opportunities with existing agents as well as new agency appointments.
  • Analyze financial information to determine performance, identify business trends and recommend process improvements.
  • Agency/territory management: manage agents in designated territory to ensure that targets for new business, renewal retention, loss ratio, and mix of business are achieved.

    I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at The Hanover Insurance Group (Worcester, MA).


    Interview process was outstanding. Very fast response time, took only two weeks from resume referral to offer. Interviews included meeting the HR Leadership team and CHRO. Recruiting team was outstanding, great logistical and administrative help and the recruiter was very professional, prompt with follow up and good interviewing process/ coordination. Great job by the team.
