Core Values

Our strategic priorities and core skills keep us focused, but our values are what make our company special.

Our values drive the behavior that allows us to move quickly and to enjoy our journey together.

We will win together.

Commitment to Winning

We believe we must commit to win in every market in which we compete, and we provide the people, products, and services necessary to do just that. We will never dabble in any market or in any product line. And, every agent partner and every customer can expect that we are committed to delivering the very best to them every day.

Underwriting Matters at The Hanover

Underwriters: the masters of risk assessment and superb relationship managers

Successful underwriters typically have a balance of strong analytical thinking and problem solving skills as well as solid interpersonal skills – both aptitudes are relied upon heavily in this entrepreneurial role. As an underwriter, you’ll apply your technical risk knowledge learned through formal training, hands-on learning and experience, to: evaluate incoming applications for insurance, make decisions about coverages and premium (price) amounts based on the application, and ultimately determine whether or not to “underwrite the risk.”

Key responsibilities:

Underwrite risk information to determine risk acceptability and communicate resulting decisions to agents.

Develop agency partnerships and agency management skills.

Ensure agents understand the business market direction, underwriting standards and new business risk profile to generate a flow of quality new business submissions and retention business.

Business cultivation: seek out new opportunities with existing agents as well as new agency appointments.

Analyze financial information to determine performance, identify business trends and recommend process improvements.

Agency/territory management: manage agents in designated territory to ensure that targets for new business, renewal retention, loss ratio, and mix of business are achieved.

I have been working at The Hanover Insurance Group full-time (More than a year)

Good people and good managers in this area. Also pay is good for what you do. Good benefits and great company 401k match.

Constantly answering phone calls from sometimes demanding customers. Repetitive work. When you are ready for more specialized responsibilities takes forever for training even when there is an obvious need.

    Advice to Management

Train employees when then are ready. Not enough people to manage special accounts.

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at The Hanover Insurance Group.

First was a job shadow to get an idea of what the position is. Then 1/2 hour interview with 3 people within the company. They made me feel very comfortable.
