The J. M. Smucker Company – Why Work For Us?

Have a seat at our table… Smucker is a remarkable place to work.  The Company is hard-wired for growth, and grounded in century-old values.  To our customers, this means endless product innovation and an all-in commitment to ethical business practices. To our employees, it shows up as unlimited career opportunities and a work environment defined by respect, appreciation and humor.

A few decades ago, a letter was found in the desk of the late Paul Smucker, CEO from 1965-1989.  In it he urged his successors to maintain an atmosphere in which people would be proud to work.  To him that meant thanking people for a job well done, listening with your full attention, looking for the good in others, and having a sense of humor.  This letter has come to be known as Our Commitment to Each Other.  More than a set of words, these four simple principles define how we show up every day at work.  Together with our Basic Beliefs, they are the guideposts for every decision we make.  And they make Smucker a place where people are truly proud to work.

In the early 19th century, John Chapman, or “Johnny Appleseed,” wandered the Ohio countryside, sowing apple seeds and securing a place in American history.

It was from the fruit of Johnny Appleseed's trees that Orrville, Ohio, resident Jerome Monroe Smucker first pressed cider at a mill he opened in 1897. Later, he also prepared apple butter, which he sold from the back of a horse-drawn wagon. Each crock bore a hand-signed seal as his personal guarantee of quality.

Before long, J.M. Smucker’s name became well known in its own right, as residents throughout the region — and eventually the nation — came to associate the Smucker’s® brand name with wholesome, high-quality fruit products.

Much like Johnny Appleseed's trees, The J.M. Smucker Company has strong roots that have allowed it to grow and prosper throughout the last 115 years. Today, our products can be found in homes and restaurants throughout the world.

When you take a job here, you’re joining a culture shaped by our heritage as a family company.  More than just a proud past, our Basic  Beliefs of quality, people, ethics, growth and independence also guide our vision for the future.  That’s why we look at hire as long-term relationship  - because we believe that each new employee brings something special to the table to help us realize that vision.

In many ways, The J.M. Smucker Company is a reflection of the community in which it is located.  Like Smucker, Northeast Ohio is a vibrant and exciting place, rooted in a history of hard work, innovation and fun.  From the rolling hills surrounding Orrville, to the rejuvenated cities of Akron and Cleveland, to some of the highest-rated suburbs in the Country, Northeast Ohio offers its residents a remarkable variety of lifestyle options.

Orrville is a small, pretty town, surrounded by farmland and comfortable homes on large plots of land.  This affords Smucker employees the unusual opportunity to own significant acreage and have a short commute to work.

Suburbs within 30 minutes of Orrville feature picturesque town squares, outstanding school systems, tight-knit neighborhoods, and some of the most magnificent housing stock anywhere in America.  From classic Victorian and Tudor homes built in the roaring twenties, to sprawling modern mansions built on generous plots of land, it’s easy to find a home to love in Northeast Ohio.

These beautiful suburbs are surrounded by a remarkable system of parks, including the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and the famed Emerald Necklace – the Cleveland Metroparks.  The area’s selection of public and private golf courses is among the best in the country, while the opportunities to bike, hike, camp, fish and zip-line are plentiful and affordable.

An hour to the north, Cleveland is an accessible, affordable cultural gem.  Its rich heritage of personal and corporate generosity led to the creation of The Cleveland Orchestra, one of the finest symphony orchestras in the world; the Cleveland Museum of Art, housing one of the Nation’s best art collections; and Playhouse Square, America’s largest theatre district outside New York City.  More recently, this commitment to culture is best exemplified by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, the Great Lakes Science Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art.

Cleveland is located on the shores of Lake Erie (one of the five Great Lakes – comprising the world’s largest body of fresh water), offering accessible fishing, boating, rowing, swimming and windsurfing.  A recent explosion in urban living options puts everything within easy walking and biking distance.  If you choose to live in Cleveland, you’ll find at your doorstep one of the finest dining scenes anywhere in the Country.  Michael Bauer, Restaurant Critic for the San Francisco Chronicle wrote, “Cleveland has the energy of a food town on the rise.”  NPR recently proclaimed “Here in Cleveland you can now get a world class meal for about what you’d pay at an Olive Garden,” prompting one listener to comment on the NPR website, “Stories like this one cause me to regret my exile in Seattle...”

Less than 30 minutes from Orrville lies the city of Akron which, like Cleveland, has experienced revitalization in recent years.  And like it’s neighbor to the north, downtown Akron is experiencing a growth spurt in high-end condos and apartments for the increasing number of young professionals working in high-tech start-ups, as well as at Smucker.  These homes provide walkable access to Canal Park – home of the AA Akron Rubber Ducks, the brand new, striking Akron Art Museum and a host of outstanding restaurants.

    Application

I applied online. I interviewed at The J. M. Smucker Company in December 2016.

    Interview

The interview process was standard. Initial phone call with recruiter, then I was informed that I was going to be contacted. A week passed by and I decided to follow up with the recruiter about the status. The recruiter then got back to me stating that the hiring manager was on holiday vacation and also asked when was it best for me to come onsite. I responded with my available dates/times and have not received any response after that. They did not inform me at all that they were going to not move on with my application.
