I worked at The News Journal full-time
You work beside some of the best people in the news industry. The reporters, editors, photographers, and videographers are top notch. Being the paper of record also means your access to sources and ability to cover neat stories is great.
Corporate was a serious drag. The newspaper industry is very tough and layoffs were frequent. Moving to design centers hurt, IMHO, the process.
Advice to Management
Keep the focus local. You have a lot of talent in that newsroom and it is imperative that you do everything you can to keep that talent.
I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at The News Journal (Wilmington, DE).
Interviewed with peers, direct manager, and senior manager. Some general technical questions were followed by questions on work ethic, career goals, and attitude.
Very typical salary negotiation with little consideration for other forms of compensation
