I worked at The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County part-time (More than a year)
The library system in Cincinnati and Hamilton County does a fantastic job in hiring the best, most qualified individuals for each and every job. There's good benefits to full-timers, and there is always a chance for raises and other compensation.
Lack of public funding makes downsizing necessary too.
Advice to Management
I applied online. I interviewed at The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County (Cincinnati, OH).
I interviewed with the HR person and the branch manager from the branch I was applying to. They were both personable and friendly. However, I felt like the number of questions they asked for a part time job that only required a high school diploma/GED was a bit overkill (I've been on interviews for a full-time job that required specialized knowledge, certifications, and a 4 year degree that didn't ask the number of questions they did). If I remember correctly, there were 3 pages of behavioral questions, and I wished I'd known ahead of time just how extensive it was going to be. Interview lasted about 30 minutes, both the HR and branch manager took turns asking questions and writing my answers down.
Things to know:
- 2 interviewers (HR + branch manager)
- LOTS of behavioral type questions, so prepare accordingly
- Arrive early/on time but prepare to wait (they called me back 15 min past my scheduled interview time)
- Visit the branch you're applying to so you can ask specific questions at the end of the interview
