Company Updates

  • Thomas Allen, Inc. has been recognized as a national standard Top Workplace. Among the many hundreds of employers that participated in this rigorous program, it is an honor to be placed in this category! The evaluation for the Top Workplaces program is based upon feedback from an employee survey, and we are honored to be included in this list of Top Workplaces for the 3rd consecutive year. Especially since the judges were our employees! However, this is a TEAM celebration, as it is the collective effort of our employee team that makes this company what it is today. This is something we can all be proud of achieving together! Thank You!

  • We talk with and interact with people all day, every day. Yet, how often do we really listen and hear what they are saying? How often do we let our mind wander, or listen with our minds already made up? Pretty often! This presentation teaches us how to engage in open, insightful and energetic conversation - with those we love, as well as with acquaintances and while at work. I bet you have someone in your life that may pick up a tip or two as well - please pass this along! p.s. you are likely to laugh a few times too, and say, "Yep, I do that!"

Originally called Alternatives for Independent Development, Thomas Allen began in 1977 when David Peterman saw the need for programs that would provide people with disabilities the opportunity to live more independently within the community. Dave’s vision eventually led to both the Horizon Apartments opening in West St. Paul, Minnesota and the company’s first Semi Independent Living Services contract with Dakota County. As a program manager at these apartments, James Perron developed a strong relationship with Dave, and as the company grew so did Jim’s role in the company.

In 1984, the two men officially became business partners with the common goal of providing residential apartment training/living services to higher functioning adults with developmental disabilities. The following years led to the expansion of services provided to people with a wide range of needs. In 1987, James Thomas Perron and David Allen Peterman changed the name of their partnership to Thomas Allen, Incorporated.

Today, Thomas Allen employs over 750 people and provides a wide variety of services to over 5,000 individuals throughout Minnesota. By retaining the core values that originally led to the relationship between Jim and Dave, and by continuously adapting to the needs of our clients, Thomas Allen has grown into an industry leader centered on the people we serve.

    Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 days. I interviewed at Thomas Allen (Edina, MN) in January 2015.

    Interview

I had to complete a personality type of quiz online along with the usual information needed when applying for a position and then a phone screen occurred to ensure I understood what I was applying for. Then an in person interview with two supervisors. Within 1-2 days I received a call with an offer extended. It was very painless and easy to apply.
