    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Ticom Geomatics (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The distinctly Austin culture allows for the worker to bring their personality to the work. It is nice to have a place to be creative and feel like you can make a difference without having to put on a suit and tie and fake the grind. Comfortable workers make for better workers. The location in North-Central Austin is good for an Austin lifestyle.

The teams that are created to tackle the projects are among the most professional and dedicated I have been part of in my more than 30 years in this business.

    Cons

The acquisition by a much larger, publicly held company brought immediate changes to the feel due to changes in benefits and a more rigid focus on predictive project planning (due to the quarterly forecasting requirements of the large company). Due to the proactive (and at times reactive) nature of publicly held companies' forecasting requirements, upper management tends to look up line and the down line workers are sometimes left wondering what the real focus of the work is. The work we are able to do, however, has not diminished.

    Advice to Management

Continue projecting the value of the current work efforts and propagating the message of what work is coming and how that fits in with the current plans. Continued transparency in our internal and external management dealings.

    Difficult Interview

    Interview

Interview with a manager left me unimpressed. The manager focused on what I knew about programming in theory, not what I can do in practice. When it was my turn to ask questions, the manager got defensive and did not answer me with tact.

From the interview, I sensed that my experience working there would be hit or miss depending on my team. Each manager uses a different methodology and level of communication with its members. I did not see unity between the company's visions and actions.
