I have been working at Toggl full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Engaged, vibrant remote work community, treats employees as grownups, competitive pay and raise packages, vacation policy second to none

    Cons

None, really; the only thing that comes to mind may be a better explanation of the benefits and use of benefits.

    Advice to Management

Toggl can work better to understand and adapt to candidates who are not used to remote work culture when first starting out. Steps have been made, however!

    Software Developer Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Toggl (Remote, OR) in March 2015.

    Interview

    Three (3) steps:
    - Online test
    - 1-2h coding challenge (voice call + screen sharing)
    - One week trial

I feel like the week trial was a great part of the process. The previous steps acted mainly as a filter.

Over the course of the week, we'd get a grasp of how the person would interact / fit in the team. Bear in mind that this is a remote-first startup, which influences the attributes we'd look for in candidates.

    - Communication is very important. We can mainly grasp what you feel / think by what you write. Participating and contributing to discussions, whether in GitHub or Slack, is very important, and the product/company gets better thanks to it. Speak out your worries, ask for feedback and be open for it, ask doubts. Don't work in a silo, the team is there to help you and grow together.

    - Motivation about learning & growing. Seeking out feedback, taking it, and acting on it, is a great indicator of this.

    - Ability to work on a remote job. Whether the person can balance life-work without neglecting one or the other. You can tell when someone is working below their potential or threshold. Or whether someone's mood is down often.

    - Proactiveness. The team is small. Most of nicer things are there because someone decided to build them / set them up. We like having nice things.

    - Care. Care about the code, the process, the team, the experience.

    Interview Questions

    • The coding challenge was to refactor a CoffeeScript class. Goals are to check:
      - if they can actually produce good code
      - the thought process, and how they tackle the problem, tests first-last, no tests, etc.
      - whether they make sure they understand the task at hand
      - whether they try to find out what they don't understand about the requirements or code

Note that they now use ES6-7. Some CoffeeScript might remain as legacy code.   Answer Question
