Toptech Systems supplies innovative automation and management software and hardware, load rack control equipment, and access control devices to both major and independent companies within the crude and refined fuels industry. Some of Toptech’s customers include Shell, ExxonMobil, and BP. Many of Toptech’s clients, however, are small companies that own either one or two terminals.
Toptech is committed to growing and improving the businesses of its customers and knows that can only be achieved through a continued focus on customer partnership, customer service, innovation, and employee development.
Toptech’s corporate headquarters is located in Longwood, Florida, a beautiful suburb of Orlando. The USA office manages North and South America. Sales and support for the rest of the world is handled by Toptech’s European office, based in Antwerp, Belgium.
We are a team of dedicated professionals, passionate about producing high quality work. We are an HPO (High Performance Organization) that believes in empowering employees to come up with solutions, learn new things, and do their best work. As a result, we’ve become the global leaders in developing automation solutions that improve processes related to validating, metering, measuring and tracking the movement of materials. We are Toptech Systems!
We work here because we love it! We love working with customers and solving their complex problems. We love designing new products to address needs that no one else in the industry has addressed. We love being part of a positive, hard-working team that does what it takes to exceed expectations. We love being encouraged to take initiative, learn from mistakes, and celebrate success.
We want you to not just succeed, but excel. In order to help you do that, Toptech offers a competitive tuition reimbursement program to support further education. This includes degrees, classes, seminars, and conferences. In addition, Toptech hosts monthly Brown Bag sessions. Each of these feature an employee teaching an hour long class of their choice. Toptech also hosts several Management Development Sessions for current and aspiring managers and trains all their employees on the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
We realize we can’t achieve this mission without being customer focused, investing in our employees, and constantly looking to take our products and services to the next level. That is why we are completely committed to Trust, Team and Excellence. Below is our Values Model.
I have been working at Toptech Systems full-time (More than 5 years)
I actually love working for Toptech! I've been here for 5 years and feel like it's an extended family. There are only about 80-90 people in the US building and 15 people in Belgium. They do so many things to really make it clear that they care about the employees. After every large customer project the team celebrates and is recognized by company leadership. We actually have a wall of fame with pictures of the teams that have worked on large projects. Also, we throw a baby shower whenever one of the women are pregnant. The most recent one was mine and they even had me invite my husband and mom. It was incredibly sweet!
I've never witnessed a company so dedicated to being a great place to work that they allow 10% of the workforce to spend time each month on projects and events for the employees. Toptech actually seeks employee feedback all the time and uses it to make real improvements. There are plenty of growth opportunities, and since we're owned by an umbrella company, there are also some opportunities to work on projects with other companies. I think the best part is that because it's a small company, you're never stuck doing one thing. We all wear multiple hats so you're never done learning.
The GM is pretty cool too. He really cares about improving the culture and making the company a more fun place to work. Since he started, we've had some awesome things happen like a Toptech Spirit Day. Each month we give a Good Neighbor award to a different employee and the GM always wears a Mr. Rogers style sweater to present it. He also approved cool lounge/collaboration areas for employees throughout the building. He has an open door policy and he attends our Daily Management meetings every morning.
I also love that we do a lot of work with the local Boys & Girls Club. It's optional, so not everyone is involved, but for those who are it's extremely rewarding.
I wish the company was more progressive with their benefits and offered things like paternity leave and flex scheduling as part of the policy. Also, much of your experience depends of your manager. A really large percentage of the managers are awesome and the other percent is getting there. Toptech actually does a ton to train the managers and help them improve. Still, some managers just aren't as passionate about developing their employees and providing feedback. Unfortunately, pretty much all the managers are working managers (are as hands deep in each project/task as the employees) so actually leading their employees can only be a certain percentage of their job. You can train them all day but if their workload is huge then they literally don't have time to do important leadership things like give quality feedback, recognize good work, and have career conversations. This makes it really important to be aggressive about seeking face time and that's just not everyone's style.
Advice to Management
Let's hire managers purely to manage. It's easier to teach someone technical skills than it is to teach them leadership skills. Also, why couldn't we offer more flexible scheduling options as a policy?
The process took a week. I interviewed at Toptech Systems (Longwood, FL) in December 2017.
The interview process was very interesting. I landed the interview after I met with the company's hiring manager at an event at my University. After submitting my information for a systems engineer I was contacted for an interview the following week. The interview was worked around my schedule, which was great for my personal life and time management. The interview consisted of a 10 minute professional presentation followed by two 30 minute interviews. The first was focused on my work experience related to the job, and the second was more about behavioral questions ("Tell me about a time when..."). The more detailed you are the better the interview goes. It all takes about an hour and 45 minutes. It goes by quickly if you are engaged and prepared. Have questions for them as well. Also for your presentation, do something that connects to the company and/or the position. You should hear feedback from the interview the following day if not that same day (your situation could be different). So it's a quick turnaround, and a great experience especially if you are right out of college. They are looking for young bright candidates to bring into the company.
