What It's Like to Work in an Office with 300 Dogs in It

There are dogs in people's laps, dogs under people's desks, even dogs sitting at desks. There are so many animals in this office, you might be tempted to describe it as a zoo. But the animal-to-human ratio at Trupanion, the pet-insurance company in Seattle, is higher than at most zoos: On any given day, there might be 300 dogs and 600 employees.

Trupanion – Why Work For Us?

undefined

About Us

We love pets. Period. We don’t just believe in the human-pet bond, we live it – every single day. In our completely pet-friendly office, we are surrounded by dogs and cats who inspire us to do great work. When we say the office has “gone to the dogs,” we mean it literally and with the most love possible. The Trupanion team has been taking care of pet owners for over a decade by offering simple, fair, and affordable medical insurance for pets. We want to help take care of your pet, and know pet owners want to work with companies that mirror their own goals and passions.

Meet our founder, CEO, and lifelong pet lover: Darryl Rawlings

When Darryl was 14 years old, his family dog, Mitsy, needed surgery that could have lengthened her sweet life for another 12 years. But, the cost was beyond his parents’ means and they left the veterinary hospital without her. He vowed that someday pets would have even better medical insurance than people do. And he's made good on that promise through Trupanion. From the day Darryl founded Trupanion in 2000, his one and only goal has been to help all pets live longer, healthier, happier lives.

In addition to his deep passion for pet wellness, Darryl has an unconventional CEO style. From his "uniform" of shorts, a t-shirt, and flip-flops, to the time he spends lounging on the floor with office dogs, he defies conformity and traditionalism. While he demands excellence from everyone he meets, he also inspires excellence, so it’s no wonder he has revolutionized the pet industry and has created a community where more than 500 pet-loving professionals are encouraged and empowered to do everything we can to help the pets we love receive the best veterinary care.

I have been working at Trupanion full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Oppurtunity
    Great Bonus Potential
Paid training and money to help you move for training
Very fast training - was back home in 4 months
    Super supportive enviroment
    No stress!!
    Amazing culture
    Outstanding benefits

    Cons

Its honestly quite hard to think of any. A lot of people are hesitant about time spent on the phone, you really don't spend much time on the phone and in claims its usually with DVMs and vet offices. The training being in Seattle may be tough for some, but I just did it all the way from New York and it was amazing, minus the cost of living in Seattle.

    Advice to Management

I really don't have any. My only thing would be introductions, like when a new class starts if all the managers/senior managers would come into the class and introduce themselves I think thats a great way to put a name with a face and shows your investment in your new employees by taking the time to come say hi!

    Interview

3 phone calls 15 min each..Last call was fine until she discovered that I had been previously employed and had moved from East coast to west coast. I guess that is too much movement for what they are looking for..Hilarious
