Twitch is one of the fastest growing technology companies in San Francisco, and we’re looking for creative, skilled and diverse individuals to help make our company, products and services even better!

Our Product

Twitch is changing the world by building its biggest live video broadcasting platform and community for gamers, and changing the way in which people consume, interact with and create live video.

  • How Big Is Twitch’s Audience? HUGE! We have a lot of viewers, that come to us from all over the world.
  • MANvsGAME says he "rage-quit" his normal 9 to 5 job and became a full-time broadcaster to make a living!
  • TwitchPlaysPokemon is an experiment by one of our broadcasters that allowed users to complete a single game of Pokemon together.
  • All of this makes us bigger than you might think. In recent metrics from DeepField, Twitch was 4th in peak internet traffic in the U.S.

undefined

Our Challenges

Twitch is tackling and solving some of the hardest technology problems on the planet and doing things that nobody’s done before, or at least haven’t done well.

  • Twitch is one of the biggest users of bandwidth in the U.S. and in the world. We’re building our own video CDN to make sure that we provide the best service possible, and we’re doing it as quickly and efficiently as possible.
  • Our live chat system, TMI, regularly delivers over 1 million messages a second, and that number is growing rapidly.
  • Our engineering team is targeting platforms from the desktop web, to iOS, Android, and every next generation gaming console.

Our People

It’s sort of a given—every career page invariably talks about how awesome and incredible the people you’ll be working with are. But objectively, we ARE the most awesome and incredible! We’ve got everyone from young grads who are excited to try to change the world, to grizzled dot-com veterans who have done it before and want to do it again. We have people with graduate degrees from some of the world’s most prestigious universities, and college dropouts whose primary qualification is the ability to get things done.

Our Perks

You should never work somewhere just because of their perks, but we do have some awesome ones. Happy people are productive people, so we have catered lunches and dinners, snacks, gym memberships, massages and more.

Just ask and we’ll get you what you need!

I have been working at Twitch full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I have been an Engineering Manager at Twitch for over 2 years. I’ve had a long career and I can now say that this is one of the most enjoyable work experiences I have ever had. Why?

The people are passionate about the product, focusing on success of both creators and viewers.

People have the best intentions here, collaborate and pitch in across teams to get stuff done and don’t just think about what’s in it for me. I’ve seen the land grab type of org, this is not that way.

The hiring process is rigorous. If you get a job here you are smart and capable.

The company has been growing incredibly fast and this has opened up opportunities for those who want to grow into new, bigger roles. I’ve promoted multiple devs to SDE II and SDE III and had an SDE become an SDM.

It’s fun working with cool, nice people on a fun product. And yes, the new office is amazing and the food is off the charts.

    Cons

Need more cross org shared dev processes and support.

    It’s easy to gain weight.

    Advice to Management

Continue working to bring more cross org alignment. Solicit input from directors and managers for company wide process changes.

    Software Engineer Interview

    Anonymous Interview Candidate
    No Offer
    Negative Experience
    Difficult Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took a week. I interviewed at Twitch.

    Interview

It begins with a phone screen with a recruiter so they can figure out where to send you for the technical interview. They had trouble placing me because of my breadth of experience and interest in functional programming languages, which they did not use. This part of the interview went well and I learned a lot about the company from the recruiter. A technical interview was set up very quickly.

The technical interview did not go as well. It began with a conversation about my background and why I was interested in the company. Then I was asked to solve a programming problem. The interviewer did not explain the problem clearly and I was left confused for at least 15 minutes until he realized his mistake and attempted to re-explain it -- which did not help. He did not attempt to help me understand; instead, he sat silently, occasionally making condescending remarks. By the end of the interview, I had no idea what problem he had asked me to solve, despite my consistent and thorough attempts to clarify the problem.

How could a software engineer with such poor communication skills ever be hired by this company? He was rude and unhelpful. This is not someone I would want to work with had I been extended an offer by the company.
