Excellent compensation and benefits package as compared to similar organizations. The advantage of living in a suburb near Chicago. High quality life. Excellent research facilities and people are generally very helpful towards post-docs. Overall a good place to make a lifelong career if you can find a permanent position.
Pace of work is slow mainly because of the amount of paperwork involved. No clear guidance on transition to a permanent position. Many times you have to generate your own work otherwise you can be here for two years and have nothing to show for it.
Advice to Management
Please make an effort to provide clear career guidance to new post-docs. The post-doctoral programs office does it but they have limited leverage. Post-docs need to hear it from their supervisors.
I applied online. The process took 12+ months. I interviewed at Uchicago Argonne (Lemont, IL) in September 2010.
The interview consisted of two parts - the first was based on finding someone who had the right fit along with the technical expertise. The second part was based on speaking with the deputy and lead directors to ensure a fit between the two parties.
No negotiation. They went way above my salary expectations.
