Excellent compensation and benefits package as compared to similar organizations. The advantage of living in a suburb near Chicago. High quality life. Excellent research facilities and people are generally very helpful towards post-docs. Overall a good place to make a lifelong career if you can find a permanent position.
Pace of work is slow mainly because of the amount of paperwork involved. No clear guidance on transition to a permanent position. Many times you have to generate your own work otherwise you can be here for two years and have nothing to show for it.
Advice to Management
Please make an effort to provide clear career guidance to new post-docs. The post-doctoral programs office does it but they have limited leverage. Post-docs need to hear it from their supervisors.
I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Uchicago Argonne (London, England (UK)) in April 2014.
The interview was well organised and went through very smoothly. First a telephone call followed by a face to face meeting with the HR director. All very friendly and helpful throughout, not as corporate as I was originally expecting.. A lot of task based questions were asked as well as general background on your CV.
