Ultius – Why Work For Us?

At Ultius, we really value our unique company culture as well as our social mission. Company culture isn’t merely a bunch of words on paper, it is a collection of behaviors that we run our business by. Our company mission statement reflects our daily goal of providing a world-class marketplace platform while reaching the scope set forth by our vision statement. We hope that you enjoy reading our organizational statements as much as we enjoy living by them every day.

Ultius Mission Statement

Our mission is to conveniently deliver high-quality content and offer tremendous client support.

Ultius Vision Statement

Our vision is to be the trusted provider of content solutions for consumers around the world.

Ultius Company Values

Values are the pillars of logic that we stand by. They help us make daily decisions by giving us a standard rubric to assess our behavior. Again, we don’t treat these as words, but behaviors that we live by.

Drive

We all share a common understanding of the challenges that face our organization and follow through with executing with tenacity, vigor and the competitive spirit.

Accountability

Everyone has clear accountability for their task and role in the company. Our success and reputation is based on the tangible results that we produce.

Client-First

A client oriented mentality that focuses on delivering top quality products and services through a shared commitment to clients.

Agility

Adaptation is the crux of evolution. The same is true when building a company.

Innovation

We invest time, capital and resources into new technologies, better processes, new products and services, and industry leading practices. We believe that predicting the future is easier when you are building it.

Non-Complacency

Doing the right things day in and day out requires carrying a feeling of urgency.

Data-Driven

We all make decisions. The trick is to make the best possible decision with as much information as possible.

Autonomy

We believe in letting you do your own thing, on your own time. But with great freedom comes great responsibility.

Teamwork

You are part of a team of talented people. Every new hire is a new strand of DNA that is added to us. The DNA that new team members add is important to us because it impacts our overall chemistry.

Hiring new team members is like opening doors. We strive to open the right doors and avoid the bad ones.

Productivity

Abraham Lincoln was once asked what he would do if he had to chop down a tree in eight hours. His response was “I would spend seven hours sharpening my axe and one hour chopping.” We approach productivity with the same attitude.

Compassion

We care deeply about everyone involved with our organization (employees, writers, editors, customers, staff members). We accept the good and the bad as a team while looking out for everyone.

Decorum

Professionalism and respect go a long way. We go above and beyond to ensure that everyone’s time with us is meaningful, just and a positive experience.

Social Mission

Since being founded in 2010, we have continued to address issues we care about.

Ultius was created to help hardworking Americans obtain contracted writing jobs. We believe in supporting America through the knowledge economy. We only hire American writers and don't plan on changing this policy anytime soon. Our commitment is also reflected by the amount of compensation we provide our contracted writers. Ultius writers generally earn more than any company that competes with us. We do this because we want the people working for us to maximize their output or value. We believe that the new economy is based on being an entrepreneur, whether you are a freelance writer or staff member.

Why writing and editing?

One thing almost everyone at the company is passionate about is writing and editing. Some of our writers have even published books and have strong careers in that space. We all love writing and genuinely enjoy providing access to writers on a global scale. For more information about our company history please visit the about page of our website or contact us today. We are a rapidly growing organization and are always looking to hire talented people.

In life, caring about the "issues at hand" is seen as admirable and noble. However, we believe that true commitment and respect for national issues requires a proactive effort. That being said, the following are commitments and causes that we not only believe in, but work hard every day towards impacting:

Eliminating student loan debt

As of 2012, student loan debt topped 1 trillion dollars (yes, that’s a T). Many of these students graduated with professional degrees and cannot find jobs. Ultius is committed to providing these talented graduates with a platform to use their skills in the new knowledge economy to help pay off student loan debt.

Bringing jobs back to America

The total U.S. unemployment rate is 5.5% as of March of 2015. Ultius is committed to helping close this gap by only hiring American writers. While tackling national unemployment is a formidable challenge, we believe that companies that commit to hiring domestically set a positive example.

Helping shape the new knowledge economy

With major declines in manufacturing jobs, the new knowledge economy is heavily expanding. We believe that the new economy will be filled with marketplace-esque platforms (like us) where individuals will have the fidelity to shape their own careers through freelancing and self-employment. Coupled with technology, we believe that giving people the option to explore different career paths is fundamentally a good thing.

Promoting online privacy and security

Online privacy is being threatened on a daily basis - whether from governments or malicious agents. The spirit of the internet was and is to make information free and accessible for all, and security considerations are a negative side effect of that. Ultius deeply believes in promoting a free and open internet that is safe for everyone to use - to matter their technical expertise. That's why we inform our customers (and the public) of security related incidents and write about it on our blog. When it comes to online privacy laws and security best practices, it's everyone's job to contribute.

I have been working at Ultius full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I have found my dream job at Ultius, and am going on my fourth year as a writer. Ultius has allowed me more freedom and success in life with the ability to set my own schedule, chose my own jobs through interest and availability, and develop strong client relationships. I get paid to learn and help people, and I feel like my dreams have truly come true.

    Cons

It would be great if a 10 minimum for a page was the norm.

    Advice to Management

    Academic Style Freelance Writer Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate in Remote, OR

    Average Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took 5 days. I interviewed at Ultius (Remote, OR) in April 2018.

    Interview

Applied online and was asked to submit a 2 page paper. Submitted it and was informed my application would not go forward as they put it, 'your sample paper missed a number of key points we were seeking.' Thats fine. I emailed them to ask exactly what points my paper was missing but was told, "We take multiple areas into consideration between your sample paper and your qualifications. While we would like to respond to every applicant who asks the specifics as to what could be improved on, we are unable to do so because it would take too much time. Even though you were not chosen for this job, it doesn't mean you are a bad writer, it just means you are not the best fit for this position."

That really left a bad taste in my mouth. Is a candidate is willing to spend 30 min to an hour writing a sample paper, the company must be willing to over what criteria the paper did not meet. Really low and pathetic of them to treat job seekers this way.

    Interview Questions

    • Guidelines for the sample paper.

We would like you to write a two (2) page sample paper on one of the following topics:

"Can excessive use of social media contribute to addictive behaviors or mental health issues?"

      -OR-

"Do the benefits of genetically modified products outweigh the risks?"

Please use two (2) outside sources to make your point. An abstract is not required, but please include page numbers, a title, and an appropriate citations page. The paper should be cited and formatted using MLA, and double-spaced using 12pt Times New Roman font. You may find this sample document from the OWL website helpful. Please use your first and last name as the file name, and send it as a Microsoft Word document. Be sure to create the sample document as a research paper using a professional tone, and not a casual or first-person essay.   1 Answer
