Founded in 1997, United Rentals has become the world’s largest equipment rental provider, with an integrated network of 997 rental locations in 49 states and every Canadian province. The company offers approximately 3,400 classes of equipment for rent with a total original cost of $11.51 billion
Our diverse customer base includes construction and industrial companies, utilities, municipalities, government agencies and independent contractors. Most of our customers align with three categories: approximately 50% are non-construction, such as industrial; 46% are non-residential construction; and 4% are residential. We also support our own family through a 501(c)(3) Compassion Fund that is funded by employees for the benefit of United Rentals employees in need.
We protect the environment through our policies and we “walk the walk” when it comes to being a responsible steward of the environment. From our systematic efforts to reduce engine idling, to the partnerships we have forged with vendors who recycle or reuse our IT equipment and used oil, we have numerous initiatives to maintain our position as a responsible company. We have metrics in place to monitor our progress on our energy consumption, GHG emissions and materials recycled, helping us to limit our environmental footprint even as our revenue grows. Veterans United is a military employee resource group that was formed to help support and promote our veterans. All current employees, regardless of military service, are welcome to be part of this community of volunteers. In every location, district and region across our footprint, passionate employees are eager to give back to individuals and organizations that have served in the armed forces in the U.S. or Canada. They support or participate in fundraising events or share their time and talents through a day of service at a Fisher House or the Valour Place.
United Rentals has created STEP (Service to Employment Program), a unique work-study program to help veterans transition back into working life. It offers 10 weeks of in-class and hands-on training, where veterans learn the technical and social skills needed to work for United Rentals, meet with our leaders and experience what its like to work at our branches with our service teams.
We are particularly supportive of military veterans, and provide significant assistance to nonprofits that help disabled veterans.
United Rentals partners with the Fisher House Foundation in the U.S. and Valour Place in Canada, non-profit organizations that provide a network of comfort homes with free or low-cost lodging for veterans and military families receiving treatment at military medical centers. Whether our partnership comes in the form of serving Thanksgiving dinner to veterans and their families in San Antonio, or donating equipment to construct a new facility in Long Beach, it is our employees that make this great work possible.
Committed to researching the newest and most effective technological innovations to aid veterans in their daily life, Soldier Strong focuses on providing Ekso Bionic suits for disabled veterans. United Rentals has sponsored the donation of two Ekso suits to the Boston and Dallas VA hospitals.
