    Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Upthere, Inc (Palo Alto, CA) in October 2015.

    Interview

Typical professional interview process. Great HR staff made everything as smooth as can be expected with just the right mix of formality and down-to-earth friendliness.

It fell apart at the technical interviews. These guys are amateurs. Speaking purely for the backend, they've obviously never run anything at scale in production, nor have any idea what the state of the art looks like.

They're super impressed with themselves for doing commodity software stuff, mostly tweaking open source and running some services, with no idea where to go next. It's fine to use the many good open source systems available, but technical leadership is severely lacking. I get the impression they want conformist types that'll fall in line with the germanic mentality and not ask questions.

Stay away if you've run real things at scale, these guys will stifle you. Got an offer and ran.

    Interview Questions

    • Signed an NDA so won't spill the beans. But it was baby stuff. The team haven't seen real traffic.   Answer Question
