Usermind – Why Work For Us?

A great CEO I know once said to me that a CEO has two jobs: to make customers' lives better by delivering value and to develop and improve the lives of their team.

That’s what we're all about at Usermind. We're building a company we love, where people can find deep creative satisfaction. We're building enterprise software that doesn’t just work—it actually delights the user. We want to dent the universe with daring ideas, and the measure of our success is whether our innovations make our customers' daily lives better.

History has shown that building a passionate culture and beloved products lays the foundation for an enduring and successful company.

If we do that, we will have done well.

Here at Usermind, we’re driven by our mission to make customer experience intensely personal and delightful. We think that marketing and business operations teams should be able to architect blissful customer experiences across all teams and systems, with no coding, queries, or dev skills required.

It takes a committed team of creative people to make that mission possible. If you want to work for a company where your curiosity, courage, and creativity will be unleashed, where you can learn from your peers and mentors, and where you’ll be pushed to go outside your comfort zone, then Usermind is the place for you.

Make a huge impact. Solve crazy challenges. Love your team and what you do.

At Usermind, we believe a strong team requires a healthy mix of respect, collaboration, and shenanigans. We don't take ourselves overly seriously, but we love getting sh** done and building serious, scalable products.

Our ideal teammate comes equipped with a good sense of humor, a desire to tackle challenging problems, and an enthusiasm for creating groundbreaking software. We are looking to hire engineers with a strong development background and deep experience with multiple types of technologies.

I have been working at Usermind full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Everyone is really friendly, whip-smart; and eager to jump in head first. We have great cross-team cohesiveness, and the management team is top notch. Very supportive both in the office and outside, always available regardless of the time. Not matter how long you've been in the game, always something new to learn here!

    Cons

Nothing that you wouldn't encounter in any startup. Wearing Multiple hats, thinking outside the box, contributing outside your normal role while still delivering over expectations. You have to have a will-to-win attitude.

    Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Usermind (Seattle, WA).

    Interview

Mostly pretty standard speed, difficulty, and time investment... but ultimately a huge waste of time due.

I applied online and received a reply back after about a week. I set up a ~20-30mins screening with a recruiter. That went well, and a few days later I had a call with the manager for the position for about an hour.

That also went well, and I was invited on-site for a ~4 hour interview. I met with folks across the organization that I would deal with in the role, and had some good conversations. It was a mix of moderately technical discussions and behavioral examples. No "gotcha" questions, no reversing a binary tree, and no whiteboarding type questions.

After a few days I hear back that the interviews went well - just one more thing, let's have you and the team (some people from the on-site interview, and the CEO) meet up for a happy hour.

    Sure, why not?

Well, I agree, and it seems like things go fine. Casual conversation, a few laughs, etc. But, there was a subtle undertone of looking for any little reason not to hire between standard chats. The group had all worked together at previous companies too. "We're a startup, we could run out of funding" - I know, you've already mentioned the funding, and I'm familiar with startups and have already said that's fine.

Despite multiple successful rounds of interviews with a cross-functional group, somehow I didn't pass their final test, which was probably decided based on the whims of the CEO. After that, I never heard back, not even a "thanks for your time, we've decided to move forward with other candidates."

My advice: don't waste your time.
