I worked at Vanquish Labs full-time (More than 8 years)
I learned a lot over the three years that I worked at Vanquish. They had a revolving door for senior software Guru, because the stuff we were doing was complex. Very cutting-edge. But a few of the engineering bosses that I've had at Vanquish stood out Above the Rest. Harold Weiss is an exceptional department manager. Paul Weiss (unrelated to Harold) is an extraordinary & gifted software engineer in all venues of the art. He has that rare Talent to propose the high-level architecture -- and then somehow make it all happen. He quickly recognizes each individual's strengths and weaknesses, and never makes them feel lesser than other contributors.
The company was underfunded. Phil Raymond should have secured 15 million dollars before attempting to open this company. He did his best to wing it with 1 million of his own and 2 million of OPM (Angel Investors). But ultimately he had to let a division of Google takeover as he ran out of funds.
Advice to Management
Great company! I am so glad that I worked for this company early in my career. We won the top editors Choice Award from PC Magazine -- no small accomplishment! But persistent underfunding was a problem. See above.
I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Vanquish Labs (Marlborough, MA).
3 rounds of interviews over 7 days, as the company narrowed the field for 2 candidates from an initial job-fair / presentation to 16 applicants. At the time, I was applying as web developer, which was a junior engineering position. I gradually worked my way up to programmer and then software engineer reporting to Harold Weiss, the Senior Software Engineer and VP (he was co-founder and director)
I did not negotiate my original salary (8 years ago), but I have been pretty shrewd in negotiating at every review, promotion, and any time that I am happen to meet with all 3 founders at one time.
