Venable LLP – Why Work For Us?

History of Client Service

For over a century, we have built our firm based on a simple and enduring premise: We see the world through the eyes of our clients. We immerse ourselves in our clients' businesses to fully understand the context of their legal issues. Our clients know that our every decision – from hiring, to shaping our service areas, to expanding our global reach – is informed by our desire to better serve their needs.

Comprehensive Solutions to Today's Complex Issues

Today, Venable is an American Lawyer 100 law firm. With more than 600 attorneys in nine offices across the country, we are strategically positioned to advance our clients’ business objectives in the U.S. and abroad. Our clients rely on Venable's proven capabilities in all areas of corporate and business law, complex litigation, intellectual property, and regulatory and government affairs.

Our attorneys have an excellent understanding of their practice areas and bring a wealth of firsthand experience to the challenges and opportunities our clients face. In this era of ever-increasing scrutiny by the government, our clients benefit from Venable’s Washington know-how. Our attorneys, many of whom are former Members of Congress, regulators and senior government staffers, have the experience to provide solutions when government creates regulatory roadblocks.

Culture of Commitment

Each year, Venable attorneys and staff devote thousands of hours of their own time, money and talent to helping the communities in which they live and work. Venable's commitment to social responsibility includes financial support through The Venable Foundation, one of the Mid-Atlantic region's premier corporate philanthropic endeavors, which, in 2014, provided more than $2 million in support to organizations and programs in our local communities.

The Venable Edge

Venable aims to deliver the highest quality legal services for our clients, and we pride ourselves on identifying, recruiting and retaining the best and brightest attorneys and legal staff from all walks of life. Our clients profit from a diverse set of perspectives that, paired with more than a century of proven experience, is unique to Venable.

What makes Venable different? For the more than 1000 attorneys and staff who work at Venable, there is no one answer. When asked, many mention the firm's collegial culture where diverse teams of partners, associates, and staff work side by side to deliver the highest quality work product to the firm's clients.

Others cite the pride they take in Venable's distinguished history and how the firm honors tradition while embracing new ideas and methods.

Clients point to the skill, dedication, creativity and superior service that our legal and professional staff provide.

For many, Venable's commitment to the community sets the firm apart. Venable attorneys and staff members give thousands of hours of their time and diverse talents, demonstrating that our commitment to service extends beyond our clients. Through hands-on volunteering, pro bono legal representation and contributions to the Venable Foundation, which provides nearly $2 million annually to educational, social services and artistic organizations across the country, Venable employees strive to make their communities a better place to live and work.

With more than 1000 personnel in nine offices across the United States, Venable prides itself on attracting and retaining staff dedicated to the firm’s commitment to client service. Across the firm, this dedication is evidenced by the tenure of Venable employees and the skills they display every day in their work. Whether directly supporting the work of the lawyers or contributing to the operations of the firm, Venable employees focus on teamwork as a primary means to accomplish common goals. Our mission is to deliver the highest quality legal services in the most efficient manner, and we pride ourselves in identifying, recruiting and retaining the best, brightest and most capable attorneys and legal staff from all walks of life. We understand fully that only relevant actions lead to success, and that developing a work environment that values the worth and potential of each and every person within it is one of the most relevant actions in which we can engage as a law firm.

Our belief that all voices are important and add significant value can be seen both within and outside the firm. Women and minorities have a significant presence in the firm’s senior leadership and throughout the firm’s management structure. Attorneys with diverse backgrounds play key roles on the firm's various committees, and assist in creating the policies and procedures that make us successful. They provide leadership to several key committees including the Management Committee, Strategic Planning Committee, and Finance Committee. Venable attorneys also offer dedicated, client-focused legal representation, and make substantial contributions to the communities in which they live and work. Indeed, that is the Venable way!

The members of our Diversity Committee are driven to ensure that no employee at Venable feels that his or her background presents a barrier to success. We believe that Justice Thurgood Marshall was correct when he said, “in recognizing the humanity of our fellow beings, we pay ourselves the highest tribute.” We know that we pay our firm and our clients the highest tribute by doing all that we can to strengthen our greatest resources, and improve the quality of the Venable experience.

I worked at Venable LLP full-time

    Pros

Partners care about long-term success of associates. Good quality of work, reasonable billable expectations, competitive compensation.

    Cons

They could do a better job of ongoing training, but I think that goes for all law firms. I also didn't see a coordinated effort at using technology to improve efficiency, such as by using document automation software.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work when it comes to employee matters. Consider investing in new technology to address the changing legal industry.

    Application

I applied online. The process took 4+ weeks. I interviewed at Venable LLP.

    Interview

The interview process was extremely lengthy and in-depth: 2 phone interviews, 2 face-to-face interviews, and 3 tests. My first phone interview was with the recruiter; the 2nd was with the hiring manager; my first in-person interview was with the hiring manager and another senior person on the team; and the last interview was with the CMO. After my last interview, it took another week and a half for a decision to be made.
