    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Veracity Forecasting and Analysis full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The work is typically quite interesting, especially since I (at least as a software engineer) have a significant say in what I get to work on. We try to have two or three projects for each software engineer to be working on at the same time so we don't get too tired of working on just a single project.

The leadership is fantastic. They do their utmost to ensure that employees are happy and comfortable. I don't have to pay a cent for health, dental, or vision insurance (I do not have a family to include on those plans, so that does help). They also encourage employees to continue to improve their skills through education. In fact, they do this so much that the company's accountants (or financial advisors or something similar) have told them to reduce the benefits, because the current benefits are too much for a company of our size.

Work hours are typically extremely flexible. Usually the only strict requirement is that we have put in 80 hours of work/vacation time every two weeks. Of course, it's encouraged to come into the office during business hours for the majority of those hours, but it's really up to the employee. I believe we even have one or two employees who work entirely remotely.

There are two separate offices, one in Brigham City, UT (about an hour's drive north of Salt Lake City) and one in Alexandria, VA, just outside Washington D.C. The Utah location is beautiful, nestled at the feet of the mountains. And while I've never been to the Virginia office, I've been in the area, and it is also beautiful and Washington D.C. is a fascinating city.

As I have a strong interest in astronomy and stargazing, being in arid Utah, near the mountains, is a fantastic place to be. The rural night skies are breathtaking, and even within Brigham City, because there isn't an exorbitant amount of light pollution, the stars are beautiful.

In general, the Utah location is great for encouraging residents to explore and enjoy the outdoors.

    Cons

Brigham City is a smallish town of about 18,000. While it's great for stargazing, it is a bit of a boring town. And since a majority of residents are relatively heavily involved with the LDS church, it is difficult to integrate oneself into any part of the community and find friends (the people are quite friendly, but the church community is very insular and since there aren't many things to do outside church events, it is difficult to make the initial contact with potential friends).

Also, since the LDS church strongly encourages its members to take Sunday off from work, most businesses (excluding the largest chain businesses) are closed on Sundays. Likewise, public transportation is also shut down on Sundays.

    Application

I applied online. The process took 2+ weeks. I interviewed at Veracity Forecasting and Analysis in May 2017.

    Interview

A recruiter reached out to me for a phone interview, she was very pleasant to speak with and we chatted about my resume, and the interview process. After finalized the candidates, I set up a video interview with some members of the Utah team. Up until this point the people I spoke to were friendly, nice and made it sound like working for Veracity was amazing. The video interview was the complete opposite. The three men I interviewed with were not excited to talk to me, and nothing seemed remotely prepared. Lots of awkward pauses and searching for stuff to talk about which threw me off compared to other interviews I've had. Just went over my resume, kept talking about how I "seemed like I was more interested in ML and we don't do that stuff here". Though I had no strict preference and expressed that to them.

Overall a super cringy and unprofessional experience, afterwards they said they would decide on the final candidates then invite me for an onsite. Mind you, no where in the description did it mention transcripts or having a minimum GPA (so be wary of that). It felt like they were searching for an excuse not to invite me to the onsite, though I really was interested in working for the company. Ended up being rejected after they asked for my transcripts.

Tldr; Phone interview with recruiter (basic resume questions, behavioral, talking about the position, benefits, etc). Then video interview with engineering team (no tech questions, more going over your resume, definitely prepare a ton of questions as they wont have any for you aka a waste of your time). Afterwards/before the video interview they'll ask for references, and after the interview they'll request transcripts. Then you will have an onsite which I assume would be where they'd have a technical interview with you.

    Interview Questions

    • Going over your resume, behavioral questions, no tech questions (I assume until you make it onsite). Essentially beating the life out of your resume with multiple people   Answer Question
