From paper-based tax reference manuals to Vertex Enterprise—the industry's first true tax management platform—Vertex has always maintained an unwavering commitment to Corporate Tax.
Ray Westphal purchased Vertex, a rate directory business, from Sorbus in 1978. Ray opened shop in rented space in Wayne, Pennsylvania, with his wife, Antoinette Westphal, joining as Vertex's first employee. By the early 1980s, the company was offering an expanded collection of products for managing transaction tax. In the late 1980s, Vertex rolled out National Sales Tax manuals, which included all general jurisdiction and products rules and regulations. The company also welcomed three Westphal children—Jeffrey, Stefanie, and Amanda—as employees.
Since then, Vertex has continually evolved to offer a full array of Corporate Tax technology solutions—all aimed at helping tax departments operate with greater efficiency, speed, accuracy, and strategic impact. From the very beginning, Vertex has retained our unique culture and values—among the reasons we've earned accolades for being an excellent place to work. We've also retained our focus on unleashing the strategic potential of Corporate Tax around the globe—with a clear vision to be the worldwide provider, partner, and employer of choice in the tax industry.
Vertex operates with a unique corporate philosophy and a highly collaborative culture. We emphasize individual and collective excellence, continual innovation, and customer intimacy—while never losing sight of the importance of a fun and friendly work environment. We encourage our people to grow and develop, stretching into new roles that strengthen skills and deliver ever greater value to our clients. Above all, we always act with integrity—keeping promises and demonstrating respect in every interaction.
From the start, the people of Vertex have fueled the company's success. Today we're an industry innovator and leader in large part because of our ability to attract and retain top talent.
With a Total Rewards philosophy, we offer employees a powerful blend of financial compensation, innovative benefits, professional development opportunities, and work-life balance. We also maintain a uniquely collaborative and team-oriented work environment--one in which every employee has the opportunity to explore original and groundbreaking ideas and nurture them from concept to completion.

I worked at Vertex (Pennsylvania) full-time
Awesome company to work for. Cares very much about its people, works hard to attract good talent and further develop the talent it has internally. Pay and benefits are outstanding. Forward looking company, that is in tune with the market and driving change in the market place. Company is also very stable.
Leadership and management opportunities - and decisions by leadership and management can sometimes be very much influenced by internal networks of who knows who. People who do not 'network' and hang-out socially with co-workers, and just go to work, do their best job, and go home to their families are very much at a disadvantage.
Career development opportunities are not as transparent as they should be, and more needs to be done for employees in terms of career development - training courses, certifications, etc.
Advice to Management
The open 'sponsorship' model of leadership / management is chaotic, creates confusion and issues.
Do more for employees in terms of career development - training courses, certifications, etc.
Find a way to make easier to 'shop' for positions internally or for leaders to 'shop' for people to staff work that needs to be done.
Synchronize the review / raise / benefits cycle - it is very frustrating to receive an annual review before December, then wait till the following March to find out what your raise is / was as of January, then in June, have that new take-home pay reduced because of changes in benefit costs.
It would be much better for employees to do their benefits changes in the fall, then have their review, then get their raise information so that BEFORE January 1, or March 1, they know what their new take-home pay will be (including the effects of any raises, promotions, and benefits changes).
I applied online. I interviewed at Vertex (Pennsylvania) (King of Prussia, PA) in May 2017.
1 hour coding exercise. You are given a game with some pre-written code. You have to write the rest of the classes and make the code work. Followed by this there will be 1 hour Q and A interview process with extremely technical questions
