I worked at Western World Insurance full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

VERY good work life balance, work from home, etc...I have two small kids and live in the woods. If my kids were sick, if it snowed, anything, no issues, no worries. Also, no one breathing down your neck. As long as the work is kept up with, you're good. Management was VERY receptive to listening. Did the change you wanted ALWAYS happen, no. BUT, they at least asked their front line, MGA facing underwriters, employees, etc...how they felt about issues, changes, etc...Management really did keep an open door policy, and was very experienced. I learned much from them and count them among my mentors in the industry. Most of the reviews on here were probably from crappy employees to be honest as we had plenty of those. If you don;t put in any time, you don;t take advantage of others experience, etc...well, yeah, it's going to seem like your job is stale...but that's your fault. MGA's were great folks, easy to work with.

    Cons

Some of the folks there have either never worked anywhere else, or maybe this is the second place they worked. In short, mostly nice, but sheltered and sometimes lazy as all get out with no real idea how bad it can be other places. Whiny, entitled, catty and ungrateful for how good it is/was. Workload could be a bear, pay was a little short for experience, designations, time devoted, travel expected etc.. but not horrible. Also, uneven underwriting teams. One team handling a $15,000,000 book may have 4 people. Another team handling a $60,000,000 book may have three people with one person travelling all the time...didn't make sense. Last, they never fired ineffectual people...just kind of shuffled them around.

    Advice to Management

Hard to say as the guard is probably changing with AIG officially being in charge now. But to former management, perhaps just push back a little more against the top guys to ensure the talent you have that WANTS to be there, and sacrifices for the company, is compensated CORRECTLY and recognized. Last, stop taking away titles that result in raises. You're creating an environment where people have no where to graduate to...that's why I took my skill set elsewhere.
