I have been working at Wimsatt Building Materials full-time (More than 3 years)
This is a steady career with decent pay/benefits. They keep you working year round in a seasonal industry. You can be promoted if you have the ambition to do so. Plenty of training and most of the time willing to help develop you. You feel accomplished when you help contractors and home owners get what the want and need.
Opportunity for bonus.
Overall, this job is pretty good if you have the right mindset.
Long hours in season.
Most of the time you feel under appreciated.
Employee turn over because of stress put on everyone, this goes for drivers and sales.
People are quick to try and point fingers and pass blame.
Doesn't feel like a team, more like everyone for themselves and "I do the most work" attitude.
Some employees are held to a higher standard than counterparts.
The customer means more to the company than employees.
Mistakes happen because of the stress level placed on every employee.
If you expect a pat on the back for doing something good(your job) it won't happen, but be prepared to answer for every mistake whether big or small.
Advice to Management
Treat your employees like people.
We handle thousands of dollars worth of material a day, you shouldn't belittle about mistakes.
Employees are so stressed all the time try making work more enjoyable.
Profit is the key however, good employees are the key to profit and losing good employees will cut into profit. Pay will only keep people so long.
We all know our parts of the job and everyone in a position should be held accountable for all parts because if someone is not doing their part someone else has to pick up the slack and that causes issues.
Listen to employees.
Lastly, I think if you made this more of a team effort you will see better results.
I have worked for Wimsatt for almost multiple years.
I have held a couple different positions, both operation and sales.
I applied in-person. The process took 6 days. I interviewed at Wimsatt Building Materials in October 2017.
Responded to an add on Craigslist. Was asked to come in and fill out an app and to do an interview.During the interview I was briefed on the position and the company. After the interview I did a test for English and math. The benefits they offer are good along with the pay. The hours in season are long. The only thing keeping me away from the job really was you have to work every other Saturday and missing some time with the family. Seems like a great opportunity though.
